Look up Horiuchi Solien and you find the work in magazines rather than in review sections. The Falmouth firm has been credited as landscape architect on Cape Cod, Chatham and Martha's Vineyard houses for more than a decade — Architectural Digest carried its landscape-design credit in 2014, and New England Home has run its projects repeatedly since. BBB lists the business as started and incorporated in January 2004, with two employees and Daniel Solien as principal. The published work has a consistent shape: residential site design planned with the architect rather than after them. A 2015 New England Home story quoted Daniel Solien on granite platforms built for "easy, step-free circulation between the house and outdoor areas"; a 2017 piece described Kris Horiuchi answering a lot hemmed in by roads on two sides with thickets of evergreens, bayberry and viburnum, plus a hedge out front. High-Profile Monthly reported in 2011 that the Boston Society of Landscape Architects elevated Kris M. Horiuchi, ASLA, of the Falmouth firm. Cape Cod Life wrote in 2021 that Horiuchi was working with the owners of a Barnstable new-build on its site constraints before the architects came aboard, and a Modern Luxury feature from November 2025 named the firm as landscape architect on a Martha's Vineyard house alongside Hutker Architects. One project sits outside the private-garden pattern: Cape News reported in 2023 that a Falmouth inclusive play space was designed by a landscape architect with the firm to go past ADA compliance, so children of all abilities could reach every structure. What you won't find is a homeowner's own account of hiring them. Its BBB page is Not Rated — BBB says it does not have enough information to issue one — and the self-listed Houzz profile is sparse and carries no reviews. That profile also lists licence number 724, which is Houzz's claim and nothing more; Massachusetts exempts landscaping-only work from home improvement contractor registration, so ask directly what registration the office actually holds. A US Department of Transportation page separately names Horiuchi Solien, Inc. and Kris Horiuchi in Massachusetts under the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program, with no status attached. This is a two-person design practice, not a crew that arrives with trucks — the right call for a site plan, a planting scheme, or terraces and walks drawn to work with an architect's house, and the wrong one for weekly maintenance. Ask for references from recent Cape and Islands clients, and for who would actually run your project given the size of the office.
