J Stefan Contracting is a Hampton, New Hampshire hardscape and paving company run by owner Jeremie Stefan, serving the seacoast region and nearby Massachusetts towns such as Amesbury, Salisbury, Newburyport, Merrimac and West Newbury. The Better Business Bureau lists a start date of February 2015, putting the company at about 11 years in business as of 2026, though its Houzz profile separately claims over 20 years — the two don't agree on how long it has operated. Customers who hired the crew for driveway paving, patios, pavers and retaining walls describe consistently professional, hard-working teams. A 2018 reviewer says a large retaining wall and fence installed came together in about a week with two masons on site, and several 2018-2020 HomeAdvisor reviews praise same-day callbacks, competitive quotes gathered against multiple bidders, and clear communication about pricing changes mid-project. Owner Jeremie Stefan is named directly in several accounts as attentive to design choices and quick to answer questions. Alongside that praise, the reviews also include real complaints worth reading before booking. Two separate accounts — a 2020 review and a 2022 review — describe paying a deposit for driveway work that was never completed, with the more recent reviewer saying they were still trying to get their money back more than two years later. A handful of 2019-2020 reviews describe pavement problems surfacing within a year: cracking, weeds growing through a driveway, or asphalt thinner than the 2-1/2 inches promised. A 2018 review also describes the crew arriving unannounced and removing cobblestones the homeowner had asked to keep. HomeAdvisor's own aggregate across 53 ratings averages 4.6 stars, and its review set is mostly strongly positive on driveway, paving and hardscape work — but the deposit disputes and pavement-durability complaints are not isolated incidents and span several years. Anyone considering J Stefan Contracting for driveway paving or masonry work would do well to ask about deposit terms, a written completion timeline, and the asphalt thickness and warranty being quoted before signing.
Over two years ago paid half the price as agreed to get my driveway done, but it never happened. Due to the pandemic I was patient but enough is enough. I've been trying ever since to get my money back. I decided to leave a bad review to see if I'll finally get their attention and get my money back.
It is rare that I find a contractor as good as this one. I was blown away by all aspects of their work and their attention to detail. The J Stefan crew is awesome, friendly and hard working. They came on time and their price was very fair. They completed a wide range of services from creating a drainage culvert, paving, spreading loam and digging up tree stumps. It is hard to find a company that can "do it all" and do it all WELL, but this one meets those qualifications! I highly recommend J Stefan Contracting.
Sign the contract on the 20th of March and dropped off a deposit of half the money 2100 and was told they could possibly be out that next week Then after that 2 weeks later and it just went on and on to the point where they would not even respond back
The work started a bit late but it was well worth the wait. They removed the asphalt from my patio and put pavers down. It looks beautiful! I highly recommend them. They know what they are doing and did a great job. Quite professional. We may have them pave our driveway as well.
Very professional and courteous until I contacted them about problems with the work. I was supposed to have 2-1/2 of compacted asphalt when complete. Less that a year later I have weeds popping up through the pavement and its clear the pavement was less than an inch thick.
