Patios, fences and backyard work bring customers to JHJ Landscaping in South Windsor. Google lists 4.5 stars from 28 ratings, and its Connecticut home improvement contractor registration is active. Customers writing from 2022 through 2025 describe completed outdoor projects in detail. A May 2025 customer hired John to strip, recolor and seal a stamped-concrete porch, praising his explanation of the materials and willingness to work toward the desired color. In June 2024, another customer described replacement vinyl deck railings, an adjustment for unusually wide stairs, and cleaning and regrouting a patio John had installed years earlier. Two September–August 2024 reviewers explicitly said they had hired the company more than once. A May 2023 fence customer compared five quotes and said John’s was about $500 lower. That customer described a larger fenced area at no additional cost and an installation completed the week of the request. A separate 2023 customer praised patio-step installation and said John made corrections without hesitation. There are also serious complaints. A June 2026 customer alleged that a planned week-long pool-landscaping, gate and deck-stair project stretched into a year, remained unfinished and was abandoned after payment. The customer reported repeated missed appointments and an uninstalled gate left on the ground. A June 2025 reviewer described a patio problem they ultimately fixed themselves after unfulfilled promises. In an update, that customer disputed John’s account of the work and said they blocked him after numerous texts following the review.
❌ DO NOT HIRE: Unprofessional, Incomplete Work, and Countless Excuses Rating: ⭐☆☆☆☆ (0/5 Stars) I hired John Horant for a residential project to handle landscaping around my pool, install a gate, and build stairs leading to my deck. It was a complete disaster from start to finish. John completely overpromised and significantly underdelivered turning a week long project into a year long ordeal. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect if you hire him: Unfinished Project & Taken Money: John abandoned the project without finishing a single component. He left the gate literally sitting on the ground completely uninstalled, and none of the work was completed. Despite this, he took my money and walked away. Severe Unreliability: He never showed up on time—not once. When he did occasionally show up, it was late in the evening. Endless, Outrageous Excuses: Over the course of the project, he broke his word on showing up more than 20 times. The list of excuses was never-ending, ranging from being stung by a spider to a friend passing away, to disappearing on month-long vacations where he claimed he couldn't receive phone calls or text messages. Completely Untrustworthy: In my opinion, his behavior, constant dishonesty, and inability to function in a stable or clear-minded professional capacity make him completely unreliable. John Horant proved to be a complete con artist. Do not entrust this individual with your money, your property, or your home. Save yourself the financial loss and massive headache, and hire a legitimate professional instead.
Simple job started out great but after a problem appeared got lots of excuses and unfilled promises. I ended up fixing the problem myself. Updated - in the year or so you waited to respond, you must have got me confused with another unhappy customer. I didn't really want to respond but the volume of untruths was too great to let it go... The patio was about 8 years old, not 20, we never saw anyone from JHJ but you so praising other employees would not have been possible. We did not have you " wash and seal another patio, along with another retaining wall" because we don't have another patio and didn't have you do any retaining walls and wouldn't since we were dissatisfied with the work. When you said part of the problem was ants, I used the pesticide you recommended- thank you, it is still working today, and didn't have you return until the ants were dead. You did not "come back 5 times to sweep a little amount of sand in between pavers" I didn't send you any rude texts but did have to block you due to the volume of texts you sent after I posted the review. I hope you have improved your work and get nothing but 5 star reviews going forward but I'll not be responding to anything further from you.
We contracted with John to strip, recolor, and seal our stamped concrete porch. John thoroughly explained the process and the materials he would use. It was apparent that he had a lot of experience and knew what he was doing. After stripping the old sealer, John worked with us to get the color and look exactly as we wanted. The end result is fantastic. John is a true professional, honest, and a pleasure to work with. We highly recommend his company!
John installed a railing for us in a timely and professional manner. He used quality materials and the railing looks amazing. John’s communication with us from start to finish was very thorough. Highly recommend JHJ!
John is a real professional start to finish. He gave us insight with the design and followed through with the finished product to make our backyard a great space to enjoy for years to come.
