PROJECT SCOPE: Repair and repoint a masonry foundation wall. CAVALIER APPRAISAL: With minimal inspection, KB Masonry proposed to â rebuild wall from the ground upâ with a â 99-year warrantyâ for $3,200, including a $2,200 deposit. VAGUE CONTRACT: No mention of warranty in the contract. Work description not specific: â Waterproof Sealer,â â Repointing,â and â All masonry Workâ checkboxes checked. PRICE TRAP: Work barely started when workers â discoveredâ a problem. The project cost increased from $3,200 to $25,000! HIGH PRESSURE: I was advised that catastrophic failure was imminent. KB Masonry was â obligatedâ to report me to city officials if I didnâ t immediately accept their $25,000 bid and immediately repair the foundation. If I declined, the city would revoke the occupancy permit for our home, we would be homeless, and my deposit would be forfeited. OUTCOME: A second contractor (Timo Services / Stonework) confirmed that a larger scope of work was clearly appropriate. Timo Services/Stone Work beautifully repaired and repointed the entire foundation, not just the distressed section, for $9,000. This is 1/3 KB Masonryâ s price! ARROGANCE: KB Masonry declined to refund any portion of my deposit, accepting no responsibility for their inept initial assessment or subsequent price gouging. Beyond that, after they had my deposit in hand, they were unpleasant to deal with. I do NOT recommend KB Masonry.
These guys are amazing. The inspected my roof and fixed my damaged shingle. They were honest and didn't just try to sell me an entirely new roof. Thank you David, I will always refer to anyone who needs roofing work.
