Homeowners who hire M&M Waterproofing & Masonry keep describing the same thing: an owner named Melvin who shows up when he said he would, prices the repair rather than the replacement, and finishes the old brick and stone work other masons walked away from. The clearest example is from a June 2024 review, where a homeowner had been told two cracked firebox bricks meant the whole chimney box had to be replaced. She had met three companies and felt she was being taken advantage of each time; Melvin, she wrote, "did not use scare tactics" and replaced the two bricks without anything collapsing. Another homeowner in June 2024 wanted brick stairs demolished and rebuilt, and was told they could be repaired for less than half that cost — the crew arrived at 8am every morning through a stretch of upper-90s heat and finished in the week promised. The work itself is masonry and water: repointing an 1860 brick house and a disintegrating garage in a July 2025 job billed at $9,000; granite stairs a September 2025 customer called "gorgeous" at $8,370; a stainless chimney cap plus waterproofing the chimney above the roofline in August 2024; concrete stairs, floors and a repointed stone foundation in February 2024; chimney flashing sealed in February 2024 at $1,600. Prices in the reviews run from $950 to $9,000, and the volume backs it up — 5.0 averages on HomeAdvisor and Angi and 5.0 from four on Thumbtack, with a written record running 2024 to 2026. Two things are worth raising on the call. A September 2024 customer in Cambridge described an unexpected overage on brick steps once unseen damage was uncovered — he praised Melvin for being upfront about it, but old masonry hides its problems, so ask how change orders get priced before work starts. And the reviews describe work well outside masonry — a February 2025 customer had Melvin help move apartments and re-mount a TV, and a March 2025 customer had a single-car garage roof stripped and replaced — so confirm the specific job you need is one he takes on. This is the right call for an older Massachusetts house needing repointing, chimney work, stone or concrete steps, or a wet basement wall, especially where a repair is preferable to a rebuild. Confirm the licence and registration numbers with the state, and get the scope for hidden damage in writing.

Hose and Melvin and the whole crew were so professional, as well as a joy to work with. Their communication was spot on, they got back to me within minutes any time I had a question. The granite stairs they built were gorgeous. So beautifully done. It was evident they took pride in their work and did everything the right way, never skimping corners. As picky as i am I can't find anything that I have any issue with. And I think the granite stairs are so gorgeous that they add value to the house. (Brick and Stone Flatwork Repair, $8,370)

I worked with Melvin to complete a replacement of a number of disintegrating bricks on an old garage and repointing the bricks on my house which was built in approximately 1860. I found Melvin honest, straightforward and meticulous with his communication and his work. Melvin gave great advice and recommended some useful changes which helped make sure the work will last even longer than originally anticipated. I highly recommended M&M for all your masonry needs. (Brick, Stone or Block Wall Repair, $9,000)

I was very impressed with the work, the workers and the contract that was presented to me prior to the work being done. I needed to repair a stone wall that was very old. The job was better than I even expected. Will definitely recommend them and I am planning on using them again for another project.
