A July 2026 customer of M.E. Astbury & Son says more than $12k worth of fill delivered over two years earlier never set properly because it was largely sand instead of the agreed 6-inch minus, and that anything driven over it still sinks. The Blue Hill company describes itself on its website as a third-generation, family-owned business specializing in residential and commercial construction, and says it has served customers for over 58 years; another line on the same site says 48 years. A December 2023 customer wrote that Daryl Astbury built their driveway and "did everything he said he would do and in the timeframe he committed to." A 2023 customer who was unhappy with a later job noted the company had replaced their septic system the year before and that they were fairly happy with that work. A September 2023 customer ordered driveway fill and got it the next day. A July 2022 customer said the crew was responsive, on time and willing to answer questions, and a June 2022 customer called them good to work with for landscape construction. In an August 2023 Google review, a customer says they asked the company to move a tree that had fallen on a garage, salvage whatever it could and clear the site; the company took out a few of their things without consulting them, then demolished the whole thing before they had a chance to look at anything, then bulldozed it flat, leaving the ground strewn with broken glass and shards of metal. After several emails the company called and agreed to clean it up, but put gravel and grass seed on top. Another August 2023 customer hired the company to remove a tree that fell on an outbuilding, called the job "very quick" but "very VERY sloppy," and says possessions were destroyed without consulting them and broken glass was left behind. A May 2026 Reddit commenter in r/maine listed Astbury in Blue Hill among a few disposal options they had used without problems and called them comparable in cost. The company's site advertises free estimates.
“I've used a few, and haven't had any problems. Astbury in Blue Hill, Blue Hill Disposal and DM&J Waste in Ellsworth are all comparable in cost.”
It's been over 2 years since I had more than $12k worth of fill delivered and it never set properly because it was mostly sand instead of 6 inch minus as agreed on. To this day, anything you drive over it sinks, and leaves a trench. I, now, have to cover all that with real fill. Very negligent and amateurish company. Don't waste your money. There are much better companies to deal with in the area.
Daryl Astbury did an excellent job building my driveway. The end result is outstanding. He did everything he said he would do and in the timeframe he committed to. I would defintely hire him again.
Ordered driveway fill, got it the next day, no complaints.
I hate to give a negative review, because they're a local, family owned business, and we were fairly happy with their previous work for us, (they replaced our septic system last year). This time, however, they failed us. We asked them to move a tree that had fallen on a garage, and salvage whatever possible, then clear it for a new one. First, they took out a few of our things without consulting with us, then demolished the whole thing before we had a chance to even look at anything. Some family mementos are gone for good. Then they bulldozed everything and flattened it...so the ground was strewn with broken glass, shards of metal, torn plastic- it looked like a dump! After several emails they finally called, and agreed to clean it up. Well, unfortunately, all they did was put gravel and grass seed on top, there's still broken glass and metal there. I wouldn't want a child or dog to cut their foot. Sorry, guys, but that sucks!
While very quick, very VERY sloppy job. Hired them to remove a tree that fell on an outbuilding, they removed some contents yet destroyed other possessions without consulting me. Left a mess, despite numerous calls and when they eventually returned, still broken glass left behind and never an apology for destroying family heirlooms. Never again!
