Martha Lyon Landscape Architecture is the firm a city calls when a two-hundred-year-old burying ground needs a plan, not a mowing crew. It works out of 313 Elm Street in Northampton, and its Better Business Bureau page puts the business's start at 2004 and grades it A+, without accreditation. Almost everything visible about the work is public commissions. Salem Patch reported in May 2016 that the city had retained Martha Lyon to give the Cemetery Commission conservation treatment recommendations for the Charter Street burying ground, down to pathway circulation, signage and lighting. The Boston Globe credited the firm in January 2017 with the designs for Proctor's Ledge, the Salem memorial where each witch trials victim's name is lit from the ground. A 2019 Greenwich Free Press article described a Binney Park master plan the firm prepared for that town's parks department; a 2021 Lexington Observer piece named Martha Lyon as one of two consultants informing the town's long-range planning; and in August 2023 the Central New York Business Journal reported the Oneida Community Mansion House would work with the firm on a historic-preservation report. A January 2026 announcement said the Adirondack group AARCH had selected the firm to develop a Cultural Landscape Report for Camp Santanoni. Who runs it: a Connecticut historical society introduced Martha H. Lyon as the firm's managing principal ahead of a June 2023 talk, and a Town of Milton page lists her with the ASLA and CLARB designations. The Berkshire Eagle had her delivering Pittsfield's Arbor Day keynote in April 2023. The homeowner's half is where this thins out. Its BBB profile carries no customer reviews, and the rest of what is written about the firm is newspapers, town minutes and press releases naming it on a project rather than anyone describing how their own job went. The projects themselves are reports, plans and designs. So: if you own a historic property, sit on a cemetery commission, or need a landscape master plan drawn, this is a practice with a documented run of that exact work going back years. For ordinary residential landscaping — planting, hardscape, upkeep — ask first whether they take homeowner projects at all, then ask for references from ones they have done.
