Ask for Lex, a Florence customer wrote in June 2025 after six years of hiring Pioneer Landscapes — and three more 2025 reviews named Lex too: an enormous yew trimmed exactly where the customer asked, a driveway re-graded and drivable again within hours, a yard quoted the same day it was called in and put back in order inside a week.
Pioneer Landscapes works out of Easthampton and says it has been at it since 1989, with Brian Campedelli as owner. The company describes itself as full-service and year-round — lawn maintenance, fertilization, hardscapes and masonry, custom construction, tree and plant health care, landscape lighting, and snow and ice management — for homes and commercial properties from Easthampton and Northampton down through Springfield. In January 2026 it announced the addition of Master Gardener Ken Conway, saying it wanted to deepen its horticulture, sustainable design and client-education work across Western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut.
The jobs customers write most about are the whole-yard ones. A June 2025 review described a sad-looking backyard rebuilt into a patio and firepit enjoyed with morning coffee; a 2024 customer had Brian quote a front-yard project the crew then finished under budget; a 2022 review credited Brian and Bob with a front-yard design worked out together on a chilly, rainy day. Everyday work lands the same way — mulch stripped, replaced and edged with everything cleaned up, in an April 2026 review; leaking irrigation valves repaired in July 2025; a lawn in disrepair brought back for a long-time customer in June 2026. Its Better Business Bureau profile carries an A+.
Winter is where the complaints gather. Two February 2025 reviews faulted the snow work: one said the front step was never cleared and snow was left behind the cars, another paid well above the usual rate for a last-minute plow and found a car walled in by compacted ice. A 2024 four-star review from a long-time lawn-and-sprinkler customer described weeds coming up the following spring through a $12,000 river-rock bed they had been told would stay clear, and a 2021 review from a customer of five-plus years called a $375 shrub trimming sloppy and lopsided, with no return visit to fix it. Two 2022 reviewers waited on estimates — one said the crew showed up late and never followed up, the other called weekly for almost three months. One August 2025 review is not about a job at all: it objects to company trailers parked in the road on a blind curve on West Street. The state registry shows the company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #189541, as expired.
For bed work, irrigation, planting and a designed patio in the Pioneer Valley, this is an experienced crew with real range — and in 2017 Campedelli told BusinessWest that the high-end full-yard transformations built around a poolscape run $80,000 to $150,000, so settle the budget early. Get the estimate and the schedule in writing, ask who handles a callback when something needs fixing, confirm the state registration before work that requires one, and if you are hiring for snow, spell out the steps, the walkways and where the plowed snow goes.
