Richard P Waltz Plumbing & Heating holds 2.7 stars from 79 Google ratings. The company says on its website that it has worked in the plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and remodeling business for over 86 years as a family owned and operated 3rd generation business, and that it handles trenchless sewer and waterline replacement and main line video inspection. The Better Business Bureau gives it an A+ grade. A mainebiz.biz item has described the Portland-based company as changing hands and eyeing expansions to central Maine. A recent Google customer said they paid over $1,000 to have a cottage winterized, and that there were three leaks when the water was turned on. That customer said Waltz said it could do nothing about it, though it was their plumber who did the work in the fall, and said they had used the company for 3 years before with no problems. A recent customer whose condo building used Waltz for plumbing and heating for many years said multiple boiler-servicing appointments were cancelled. That customer said Waltz told them a larger water heater would not fit in the basement, and that Pine State later upgraded it with no issues. On a dryer-vent cleaning, that same customer said piping was left disconnected multiple times. A recent customer with radiant floor heating said a routine maintenance visit took about 5 months to schedule, and that a $1,855 repair was followed by a slow leak. That customer said the company acknowledged the oversight but still charged $175 for the follow-up visit and leak repair. A 2026 reviewer who called for a bid on a PM for four commercial boilers wrote that the receptionist hung up before they could explain the job. Its Maine plumbing licence, MS90008478, and its Maine HVAC licence, PNT1297, are both active.
“Portland-based Richard P. Waltz Plumbing & Heating Co. is changing hands and eyeing expansions to central Maine.”
I paid over 1000 to get my cottage winterized and when the water was turned on we had 3 leaks. We had another company turn on the water because of the high prices from Waltz. Paid another 800 and then noticed another leak. Waltz said they could do nothing about it despite the fact it was their plumber who did such a poor job in the fall. High price and not standing by the work they perform deserves a 1 star but I had used them for 3 years prior with no problems so gave 2.
My condo building was using Richard Waltz for plumbing and heating services for many years. They have always been high cost, but in the last year we have had nothing but terrible experiences. Multiple appointments for boiler servicing cancelled. Seems they keep losing HVAC techs. Then we used them to spec a water heater. They told us we could not fit a larger unit in our basement. They were wrong because Pine State upgraded our water heater with no issues. Plus Waltz did not identify the need for a code required chimney liner. Last job was to clean our dryer vents. They left piping disconnected multiple times. Will never use them again.
I have utilized their heating service repair on a few occasions (I have radiant floor heating). I paid over $3000 a couple of years ago to fix a significant issue with my system and asked the technician at the time if my heating system was worth the investment and they assured me that it was in good shape otherwise. Then about a year later I called to request a routine maintenance visit-it took about 5 months for availability. When the technician arrived they said that the furnace block was cracked and needed replacement. I paid $1855 for this repair. Over the following days, I noticed a slow leak. I called and it was acknowledged that this was an oversight. However they insisted on charging me again for the follow up visit and leak repair. $175. I tried arguing that this wasn't appropriate and not good customer service but was told that they "didn't have a choice and needed to charge me." I won't be using their services again.
I called to ask for a bid on a PM for 4 commercial boilers and got the receptionist. She was terrible. No kind of customer service was given. I would not recommend them as a business partner to any company. She hung up before I could explain the job, cut me off while speaking, and would not give her name when answering and upon being asked as a pleasantry. Terrible service.
