Everything customers have written about Sluggers Home Improvement was written a while ago — the newest account on any of its four directory pages is dated March 2017. The company works out of 69 Wyeth St in Malden and is set up as a general contractor rather than a single-trade shop. Porch describes it as a Malden general contracting outfit handling everything from a small bathroom renovation to a multi-million-dollar 3D printing lab in Somerville, and Houzz says it is family-owned and was established in 2008. Reviewers almost all name the same person: an owner they call Mark. Bathrooms and kitchens are what people actually hired them for. In a March 2017 Houzz review a homeowner described a full bathroom gut — insulating, rewiring, replacing plumbing, then plastering, tiling and finish carpentry — and said the price was competitive and the job landed inside the estimated window. Another 2017 reviewer, mid-way through a kitchen and bathroom, singled out the clean work space and being kept informed as the job went. A June 2015 Angi customer working through a fixer-upper listed bamboo and tile floors, custom bathrooms, a fence, re-pitched gutters, a leak-free roof and new Harvey windows from the same crew. Three things are worth pinning down before you call. The ratings don't fully agree: Houzz and Angi both show 5.0, from 6 and 5 ratings, while Porch averages 4.53 across 17 online reviews and the BBB page carries no rating at all, saying it has too little information to issue one. Neither do the tenure claims — BBB lists a 1/1/2017 start and 9 years, Houzz says 2008, Angi says 17 years, Porch says 20. And one of the five-star Houzz reviews is written by someone who identifies as a subcontractor on the company's own crew rather than a customer. Houzz also prints a licence number, CS109409, for the company. That is Houzz's listing rather than anything confirmed against the state registry, so ask to see the current licence and insurance certificates yourself. If you want a small Greater Boston outfit where the owner runs the job himself, the older accounts are consistent about exactly that. Ask for two or three references from the past year before you sign, since every account on file dates from 2015 to 2017.
As a subcontractor/team member of Sluggers I've seen first hand the time, dedication and quality that Mark and his crew put into every job! The crew takes properties that are extremely distressed in most cases and brings them back to life, all done on time and in budget. I have business relationships with quite a few builders and these guys are definitely some of the best!
Amazing company, Sluggers is consistently understanding of what I want as a costumer and always does amazing work. They have remodeled numerous apartments for me, all better than I expected for a sufficient cost. They do great work with great people, I wouldn't call anybody else.
Sluggers has been very easy and clear to work with. Most companies will work for themselves but Sluggers not only saw my vision but they helped enhanced it. Theu have made me look at home improvement services in a whole diffrent light.
I hired Mark to redo a bathroom and I was very impressed. Even my picky and skeptical wife was pleased. Mark is both extremely honest and communicative and is also a great craftsman. His price was very competitive and his teams work of gutting insulating rewiring and replacing plumbing and then plastering tiling and finished carpentry came out beautiful. I felt like they did things the right way and did not take short cuts. But at the same time finished within his estimated time frame. I am hoping to get the sluggers team when we eventually do our kitchen.
Mark and his team are doing my kitchen and bathroom over right now. They're not even done yet but I'm completely satisfied already. They keep a clean work space, and pay attention to the small details of their work, which makes me very happy. I'm also very impressed with the way Mark keeps me informed on every aspect of the job while it's going on. I really feel like I work with them. I guess that's why the slogan for Sluggers is "we're always on you team". I'm glad I went with a smaller company because they concentrate on my project with more insight, and they actually have time for my questions and request. All in all I'm really impressed with this company and highly recommend them. Oh yeah one last thing Lourdes the office manager has really good taste she helped me pick the tile, cabinets, plumbing fixtures and paint. Like I said they're not even done doing the finishing touches and both my kitchen and bathroom are beautiful. Money well spent!
