Valley Home Improvement, Inc. is a design-build residential remodeling company at 340 Riverside Drive in Northampton, working across the Pioneer Valley on kitchens, bathrooms, additions, sunrooms, porches, basements and garages with its design and general contracting in-house. The company says it has been renovating in the valley for over 31 years; BBB records put the business start at January 1992 and name Steven Silverman as president and owner. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, number 105543, is verified active in the state registry under the company's own name. The praise is unusually consistent about how the work is run, not just how it turns out. Reviewers writing this summer describe first-rate craftsmanship, meticulous cleanliness and design work done in CAD; one says the company remodeled a kitchen and bath and later a basement into a family room with a kitchenette, both to the same standard. Earlier accounts fill in the same picture: a 2023 reviewer describes a down-to-the-studs bathroom finished in about four weeks while the household kept living and working in the house, a 2022 reviewer describes the rest of the first floor being sealed off during demolition and tidied at the end of each day with timeline and budget held, and a 2023 kitchen remodel drew praise for the lead carpenters meeting the homeowner morning and evening. Reviewers name individual staff repeatedly — Dan Bradbury on design in the 2016 and 2017 Houzz reviews, carpenters Zac, Eric, Matt, Chris and Cody, and Steve on communication. The complaints cluster on getting in the door rather than on the finished work. A 2024 reviewer gave one star purely because the reply to their contact form said an estimate could take two to three weeks, and a 2017 Houzz reviewer met Steve in September for a condo renovation and never received the promised estimate despite repeated follow-ups. A 2019 Houzz reviewer describes a porch built in 2005 that rotted because railings were installed upside down and screws were not sunk, plus a second layer of asphalt shingles nailed improperly; the Houzz profile records the current owner replying that he bought the company in 2015, ten years after that job. Two Reddit commenters in r/westernmass in May 2026 also said they would not recommend the company, one after a previous project and one after a consultation. Google shows 4.6 stars from 32 ratings and Houzz 4.4 from 15, alongside 2016 Big50 and Reader Choice awards. Valley suits a Pioneer Valley homeowner who wants design and build under one roof and values a clean, tightly managed site. Ask early for a written timeline for the estimate itself, and ask who will lead your project, since the strongest reviews are the ones that name their crew.
“When we had Valley Home Improvement come out for a consultation, the guy might as well have said "i'd just tear it down and start over".”
“I’d worked with Valley Home Improvement previously, they’re definitely a more budget-friendly option, but would absolutely not recommend.”
“Valley Home Improvement. Expensive but excellent, including really good project management and an owner who really listens to his clients.”
“So far I've heard good things about Valley Home Improvement in Florence and Kitchen Concepts in Hadley.”
A few years ago I did a review of VHI. However, when I dropped my old Google workplace account it was lost. I need to repeat that review. A few years ago they remodeled a kitchen and bath. The work was first rate. VHI has the best craftspersons, they are meticulously clean, and they use state of the art CAD (Computer aided design). Would not do a remodel without their skilled use of CAD. Recently we had them back to remodel a basement into a family room with bath and kitchenette. Again, their work was first rate. They are great to work with in part because they listen and work at executing the home owner’s design ideas rather than do some cookie cutter remodel.
Working with Valley Home Improvement was a wonderful experience. Their craftsmanship, communication and friendliness was exceptional. We appreciated the daily clean up. They definitely earn 5 stars.
Valley Home improvement-Five Stars Valley Home improvement gets my highest recommendations! They did an excellent job soundproofing and upgrading my front bedroom. Their work is extremely professional, and their attention to detail is impressive. The upgrade definitely increased the value of my home, the room looks great, and it is so much quieter than any other room in the house. Everyone on the VHI team was nice and easy to work with, and they were very accommodating with my scheduling needs. I am very grateful several of my neighbors highly recommended them.
You send them contact form Tell them what you'd like so you can get an estimate and they send you another email stating you could take two to three weeks to get back to you?? Are you kidding me? Two to 3 weeks well then you must be so busy you don't need my business and I'm definitely not going to give you it. That's disgusting How can you run a company like that. No wonder you reviews are so bad
We have worked with VHI for two big projects. They are professional and great to work with.
