W.H. Riley & Son delivers heating oil and propane and keeps furnaces and boilers running from offices in North Attleboro and Taunton — a family business the company says has run under founder William H. Riley's descendants since 1873. For years, its reviews read like a company people stuck with: a 20-year customer had a dead, 26-year-old furnace replaced within days of it failing, and another had a boiler leak fixed within three hours of an 8 a.m. call. Technicians — Ken, Ray, Pat and Brendan among them — are named individually and praised for showing up on time and doing the job right. That run carries through 2022 to 2024. Then it turns. Every review on file from the past six months is negative, and several describe the same kind of trouble. A six-plus-year customer was refused a propane delivery over a payment more than 30 days late, even after settling the bill the same day. In March 2026, another applicant said a staff member named Malissa told them to find oil elsewhere after a credit check didn't go their way — the same name comes up in both complaints. In November 2025, a reviewer described employees arriving at 7 a.m. to repossess propane tanks from three elderly residents in near-freezing temperatures, despite a $400 payment already made. An August 2026 review cites a missed boiler-maintenance appointment and shifting explanations from a manager, and in February 2026 a longtime autofill customer said they were overcharged by $0.78 a gallon on a 365-gallon propane fill. Its BBB profile is an A+, and Google's own page shows a 4.6-star average from 224 ratings — well above what its most recent reviews would suggest. Worth asking directly how the company now handles late payments and account changes, since that's the thread running through its recent reviews. It's a reasonable call for oil and propane delivery and routine boiler or furnace work, backed by technicians reviewers name individually — but anyone on autofill or a payment plan should get the billing and cutoff policy in writing before relying on it.
“When Jonathan Allen's great-great-great-great-grandfather, William H. Riley, founded W.H. Riley & Son, he delivered the leading heating products of the day - coal and wood - on horse-drawn carts to customers in North Attleboro.”

“chances are that companies such as W.H. Riley & Son Inc. of Taunton and North Attleboro will endure.”
Had a good experience with people I interacted with over the years (for 6+ years) until dealing with “Jean” and “Malissa” who refused to make a basic propane delivery because I owed a payment more then 30days. I’ve always paid my bills, been loyal to the company, but because of the way I was treated due to “policy” I’ll be moving away to another oil vendor. To lose a long term customer over one propane delivery and a single payment? Trash business model. I made the payment same day as this BS, and they seemed happy to close my account. Awful business - avoid and choose one of dozens else around!
AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!!! They will lie and say what you want to hear and then put different messaging in small print. They say they will work with you which is 100% false, and they take NO responsibility for their TERRIBLE service.
If you have any other option, use it. These people will lie and feed you BS about a budget plan and then screw you with a massive bill. Absolute THIEVES!!!
Called on 8/10 to schedule a boiler maintenance as it was always maintained by them with the previous owners. I spoke with who calls herself the general manager and she scheduled it for 8/19 at 8am (there was no mention of having to sign up for delivery - which I would have had she disclosed that). Nobody showed up. I took the day off and gave them a full 24+ hours and never heard a thing. I called back today and spoke with the same “General Manager” and she during the call told me several different stories - that they were there at 8am to which I said I’d pull up my ring camera and she immediately started back tracking by giving a different story. Lo and behold nobody was at my home at 8am (I would know as I have 3 dogs, 2 would alert and a puppy so I am home all day). She continued to talk over me and tell me new and contradicting information and part of that was that I needed to sign up for a membership or oil delivery. Do not recommend ever using this company. They can’t get anything right and their “General Manager” needs a new role because my god it’s astonishing how she acted.
Tried to sign up as a new customer, Tom was amazing at explaining everything and we were excited to have this checked off the list for the new home we purchased..... UNTIL I had to deal with Malissa... I spoke with her and she said that my soft credit inquiry didn't fall into their parameters and to reapply with my husband's info. I said sure! Did it right away... Then she calls me back and the only thing she said to me in the most degrading tone was "You need to find oil somewhere else" that's the most unprofessional thing I've ever experienced! I asked her "so because our credit isn't perfect we can't buy oil from you?" To which she responds, I own a home with oil heat too that's just how it is" I would've happily proceeded paying COD or had the account set up with my mother for now easily but after speaking to my that way, no ma'am. No one should do business with people that are quick to look down on you because of that not knowing your situation and not providing other options. Thankfully they showed their true colors before I signed a contract and I have found a MUCH BETTER COMPANY.
