Ace Handyman Services Greater Boston runs on a rotation of named craftsmen — Matt, Mike, Derek, Dan, Al — and their customers review them that way, by first name, one job at a time. Working out of Lexington, this is the shop people call for the to-do list that never gets shorter: a trellis hung on the side of the house, crooked porch planks reset, a shed door that won't close, a window that won't stay open. On Google it carries 4.8 stars across 492 ratings, and its Better Business Bureau page is an A+ with accreditation. The range is the story. In the last few months alone, homeowners describe a vinyl fence repaired after a tree limb came down, rotted exterior window sills rebuilt, and a deck that turned out to need more work once the old planks came up. People also mention mini blinds, a mailbox, and a retractable attic ladder installed, and a garage entry door re-aligned with a new lock set and deadbolt. The notes that recur are tidiness and follow-through — crews cleaning up after themselves and finishing what they came for. One customer got same-day help for a jammed front door; another had repairs they'd put off for months finally scheduled within a week. There's a thread worth pulling on before you book, and it's the office side, not the tools. A few recent customers hit friction getting a clear estimate or bill: one was quoted about an hour for a handful of small jobs and watched it stretch to nearly three, leaving feeling it was expensive; another could only get a bottom-line number with no breakdown of the charges; a third said they never got estimates back at all and couldn't get a reply by email or text. And the work isn't flawless every time — one recent painting job left a wall uneven, with spilled paint and drips onto the baseboard. Those are the exceptions against a deep, steady history — 41 reviews in the last six months, only four of them negative, on top of a record stretching back to 2016. For small and mid-size home repairs — carpentry, doors and windows, decks and railings, blind and fixture installs, paint touch-ups — this is a reasonable call. Pin down the estimate in writing and ask how they'll itemize the final bill before the truck rolls, and you've handled the one thing their own customers flag most.

Joe was a friendly guy, but I do not he did a good job. The wall he was supposed to sand smooth before priming and painting is uneven. He spilled half of my quart of paint and spent at least 15 minutes cleaning up that mess. Then paint dripped onto the base board, and so he had to repaint that, which then took more time. But the job he was supposed to do was not done well. I pointed to spots he did not paint properly and so had to redo. In the end, I paid for all his labor, including labor associated with cleaning up his messes. I am also mostly out of paint for that wall because he spilled half of it. If I need more, I’ll have to spend another $50 for another quart. In other words, I have to absorb the extra cost of a job that was at best fair. Not satisfied with this at all.
