Two things are true about Afford-A-Move at once, and a homeowner needs both.
The first is that the moving itself is usually done well, and people name the men who did it — John, Sean, Greg, Kip, Carlos, Yassil, Bob. A January 2026 customer had a 500-pound fireplace insert stuck in a U-Haul for three days; he called at one o'clock and it was moved by half past four. A December 2025 reviewer moving out of an eighth-floor apartment on a freezing, foggy day had everything wrapped and covered against the weather. Long hauls recur — New Hampshire to Virginia, Massachusetts to North Carolina, a two-apartment pickup driven to Rhode Island — and Doug Maroney, the owner, does walkthroughs and turns up on jobs himself. On Google the company sits at 4.6 across 174 ratings, and on Porch at 4.4 across 113.
The second is what happens when something breaks, and it reads as a pattern rather than an incident. In July 2026 a customer says Doug's truck damaged their stone wall, that he promised a repair and then never scheduled it through weeks of calls, and that they have video and photographs. In September 2025 another describes a piano, a grandfather clock, a leather sofa and an elliptical base damaged and a screen door walked through, with the owner promising to come and assess and not coming. In April 2024 a reviewer said a damage claim filed nine months earlier had gone unanswered. And a review first posted in December 2023 was updated in April 2026 to say the dispute ended in court, that the reviewer won $5,000, and that the company put up no defence — that is the customer's account, not something confirmed against a court record.
The Better Business Bureau puts the same thing in a single line: the grade is B-, and BBB gives the reason as failure to respond to a complaint filed against the business.
Money is the third thread. A 2023 customer says a $1,300 quote came back as a $2,000 bill. A 2022 customer says the crew arrived four hours late, took no inventory, and delivered a week past contract. Others report the opposite — an April 2024 estimate well below the national chains, and a 2026 move that came in under quote.
The recent trend is worth saying plainly: of the three reviews in the last six months, two are one-star.
Hire them and the crew will probably do a good job at a competitive price. Protect the other end: get the quote and its hourly assumptions in writing, do a written, photographed inventory before anything is loaded, and confirm the valuation coverage and exactly how a damage claim is filed and by when it must be answered.

Doug Maroney with his truck damaged my stone wall during a move and when I confronted him promised to repair it. I have a video of this and photos. The next day when I asked him to schedule the work, he said next week. After weeks of calls and no action, it’s clear he does not stand by his word. I cannot recommend this company. If the repair is ever completed, I will revise this review.let it be known that even if Doug Maroney had sent a man over to pick up a "stone" did not take care of the situation as the primary damaged he caused is a large field stone jutting into the driveway. Better ask him for his insurance info before hiring him. He is not a man of his word. This business is not recommended by the better business bureau. Take a look.
So I had this enormous fireplace insert in a uhaul for 3 days( another story), and it weighed more than expected and was extremely awkward as well. Not knowing what to do I thought about Doug Maroney from Afford A Move in Salisbury. I called and Bobby answered. He was polite and professional and felt it was a job that they could do, no problem. We started our conversation around 1'oclock and by 4:30 it was moved. What happened in between was unbelievable. Bobby and Luis showed up, reviewed the job and began the work. Safety first was step one. Then the actual move of a 500 pound fireplace which was engineered perfectly. I can't say enough of what a great experience with this company. Thanks again guys!
I can not say enough great things about the two men that came and helped me move. It was rainy foggy and icy day and these men wrapped and covered my stuff to keep everything dry and safe. All my belongings were moved without any issues or damage. The move was difficult I lived on the eight floor with busy elevators and Kennedy and Bob moved everything with what seemed like ease and always smiling and never upset. They were so easy to get along with and kind and respectful to me and my belongings. They made a difficult move easier. I’ll forever be grateful to these men and Doug. I highly recommend this moving company.
