Every written customer account of Apex Carpentry landed in a single stretch of 2015 — four of them, all five stars. What the shop has built since shows up in permits instead: 17 projects listed on BuildZoom. The company works out of 29 Bates Rd in Swampscott and, per its BBB profile, started in 1988, incorporated in Massachusetts in 2004, employs eight people and is owned by John and Louis Spagnoli; it also trades as Apex Contracting. The BBB grades it A+ without the company being accredited there. On Houzz it presents itself as a family-owned general contractor serving Massachusetts since 1988, with typical job costs it puts anywhere from $1,000 to $4 million. Those 2015 reviews are unusually specific for their number. One homeowner in June that year described a fully custom home build and said the Spagnolis were still coming by a year after move-in to take care of small things. Another, writing days earlier, traced a relationship that began with custom deck benches and a walnut fireplace wall refaced floor to ceiling, then grew into a gutted kitchen and dining room and, the year after, a master closet, bedroom and bathroom. She was blunt that they are not the cheapest bid, and equally blunt that they stayed on budget and told her how each change would hit the bottom line before doing the work. An April 2015 review credited John Spagnoli with finishing on schedule and with the custom millwork detailing. The caveat is age. Those accounts describe the shop as it was a decade ago, so ask what the crew and the schedule look like now. Two directories publish a licence number here — Houzz shows 024784, BuildZoom shows Massachusetts home improvement contractor #123150 — and neither was confirmed against the state registry, so treat both as the directories' listings rather than proof. For a carpentry-led remodel, an addition, or millwork you want done properly on the North Shore, this is a long-established shop that reads as finish-focused rather than cheap. Get two or three references from the past year and confirm the registration yourself before signing.
Apex Carpentry built our dream home and we could not be happier! It was a very, very long and involved project as every aspect of the home is entirely custom. The details are fabulous and the Spagnoli's truly care about their customers. In fact they are still around for me even a year after moving in. Whenever I call, they respond immediately and often come over to take care of a small thing here or there. A VERY important attribute when engaging in a relationship with a contractor is this - trustworthiness. I cannot emphasize enough that doing business with Apex will be doing business with good, honest people.
My relationship with Apex started by having them build custom deck benches and refacing the wall of my fireplace with Walnut from floor to ceiling. I thought for sure this project was too small for them to accept, they took me on as a client and treated the job as it was the most important job they had. A year later we gutted our kitchen/ dining room and the year after we added on a master closet and updated our bedroom and bathroom all with Apex. I LOVE working with the APEX team, they are a family business and you can tell. They want to make you happy- PERIOD. They are not the cheapest bid BUT they will give you what you pay for. They show up. They perform. They know how to manage a production schedule. They take responsibility for what they have to do. They are masters in their craft and take pride in their work. They stayed on budget and informed me when I made changes how that would affect me in bottom line before they would do the work. and....They always cleaned up at the end of every day. But, most importantly to me, was that they listened to me and what I wanted, it was a true partnership. I would tell John, " you guys are dream makers". Everything I wanted happened, even things I didn't know that I wanted- happened. How many people can say that they enjoyed the experience of home remodel while living through it?
Apex Carpentry truly cares about and takes pride in the quality of its work. John Spagnoli was amazing to work with and has a superb team of project managers. He was always courteous and completed the job on schedule. John's attention to detail with both the project timeline and custom millwork details brought the project to a higher level.
Apex did my kitchen and living area renovation. They did a beautiful job! Craftsmanship, client relations, and project management were all excellent. Highly recommend this company!
