In August 2026 a Google reviewer wrote that their timeline "ended up being two full months shorter than originally projected," with an installation "complete with a crane," and thanked Tim and his team, Tommy the site manager and Jake the lead carpenter. Backyard ADUs is a Brunswick, Maine builder of small homes and accessory dwelling units; the company says it has been in business seven years. In October 2026 another reviewer wrote that the project, from a first meeting with Tim to completion, was "completed ahead of schedule," with Tim and Tommy sending updates throughout construction. In January 2026 a Portland customer wrote that the company started from its L-Line model, tweaked it to fit a very limited city lot, and "managed city approval and utility installation." Also in January 2026, a reviewer whose home renovation had gone through "two absolutely awful contractors" wrote that Backyard ADU had them back in a new home within less than a year. A March 2025 reviewer who had a fire while the company was working on the house wrote that it "bumped me to the front of the line" and finished two weeks early. On r/portlandme in May 2025, a commenter called it a "good GC specializing in tiny houses. Not high design, but they get shit built." In August 2023 a two-star reviewer described "a two year nightmare": a quoted price raised several times, a completion date that kept moving, Construction Dispute Mediation more than a year into the build, and Chris Lee not following through on the agreement for several months. The reviewer wrote that two independent inspectors found significant problems, including ground sloping toward the foundation, and that they sold the house and "lost over two hundred thousand dollars." A September 2023 one-star reviewer wrote: "Votech student quality, millionaire prices." In March 2024 a four-star reviewer who was happy with the house wrote that the company "may benefit from spending more time following up with subcontractors."

The team at Backyard ADUs is amazing! From our first meeting with Tim to the completion of our ADU, the entire process moved quickly, and the project was even completed ahead of schedule! Both Tim and Tommy kept us consistently informed with updates throughout construction, and everyone involved in the build was fantastic. The entire team was professional, reliable, and a pleasure to work with. After visiting a BYADU house in Florence, MA we contacted the office in Brunswick. We were in the process of moving from western MA to North Yarmouth, ME and were impressed with the concept, their models, and their openness to our ideas and variations. The whole building process - from design to site preparation to construction to change orders - was smooth and timely. Any time there was a wrinkle - and there were few - Jeff and James were quick to either respond themselves or send a staff member to attend to the details. Communication lines were always open and their responses to our questions and requests were clear and timely. They were sensitive to our journey - from our house in Massachusetts where we had lived for 46 years to this restart in Maine - and clearly understood the emotional and logistical challenges that came with this major life transition. As should be clear from the above, we recommend - without reservation - BYADU to anyone looking to purchase a small, well-built, energy-efficient, attractive home. We are slightly biased because these guys and gals are our superheroes. After moving quickly through two absolutely awful contractors who were renovating our home, which essentially left us homeless in our backyard, Backyard ADU came in and quickly came up with the best and most affordable solution for us to move forward. Within less than a year, they had us back in a brand new, beautiful home. Our review wouldn't be different if we had started with them from the beginning. From the top of their company down, everyone on their crew had a great attitude, helpful and nice, with no drama. All the work was of great quality. Like any other builder in Maine, they are busy, but they always respond and show up when it matters.
