Black Bear Landscaping Design does landscaping, from patios to drainage fixes. Its website says the company has been transforming yards in southern Maine and New Hampshire for more than 40 years. The same page names Jack Oswald as owner. A 2024 customer who had just moved to a home in Kennebunk said large pools of water sat in the back yard for about a week after a big rain storm. That 2024 customer said Black Bear's suggestion was a rain garden with water-sucking plants, bushes and a large tree. The same 2024 customer said the project took about a week and a half, and that after two rain storms there was zero standing water. A 2024 customer said Jack, John and the entire crew listened to their general idea for a patio, fire pit and landscape and shared their professional opinion. That 2024 customer said Jack suggested using some cobblestone. A 2025 customer described a backyard remodel with a patio and an outdoor shower space, and said the project was done ahead of schedule. That 2025 customer said that when things changed, the company worked with them on price. The same 2025 customer wrote that some of the grass "hasn't come in great" because of the drought, despite daily watering, and that they were still communicating with the company to have it looked at. A 2024 customer said the new sidewalk looked great, but that some shrubs and trees were not planted properly and the irrigation was inadequate, leaving a large dead rhododendron and a white spruce one-third dead. That 2024 customer said promises were made to fix everything in the spring, and that no one from Black Bear would communicate with them.
Jack and team were great work work with. I had a backyard remodel project with a patio and outdoor shower space planned. We worked with multiple companies on plans and price, and ultimately chose Black Bear because of their consultative approach and alignment with our vision. They got the project done ahead of schedule and executed on the plan. When things changed, as they always do, they worked with us on price and we're happy with how it turned out. Some of the grass hasn't come in great because of the drought, despite daily watering. Even though the project is done and paid for I'm still communicating with them to have it looked at, possibly reseeded. I fully expect they'll work with me to get it resolved as they did with the rest of the project, and will update review based on how that all turns out!
Wonderful job by Blackbear Landscaping! Very professional and efficient.
Jack, John and the entire crew listened to our general idea. Then they shared their professional opinion which greatly enhanced our basic concept into a "dreams-come-true!" Our patio, fire pit and landscape fit perfectly into the landscape. Little did Jack' know that his suggestion in using some cobblestone made my heart happy because it was one of my Dad's favorite stones. This team does it right!
We had just moved to Maine and bought a relatively new home down in Kennebunk. The yard grass was weak and there had been very little done in the way of landscaping. After the first big rain storm we found that one of the reasons we did not have grass in large portions of the back yard was because of standing water. The pools of water were very large and stayed around for about a week (5-7 days). We called several landscape companies, and settled on one that said they could solve the problem by grading the backyard and bring in loads of loam and hydro seed the backyard. Needless to say this did not solve the problem, but made to worse. After interviewing several more companies, we landed on Black Bear Landscaping. His suggestion was to create a rain garden with water sucking plants, bushes and a large tree to help mitigate the water issue, and guarantied that would solve most of the standing water issue, allow grass to grow and would look nice. After 2 months of deciding that this was the right way to go, the project was commenced in June 2024, took about a week and a half to complete. Had two rain storms after completion and ZERO standing water and it looks fantastic. We are very happy with our choice of landscaping companies and the completed project that was done by professionals that knew what they were doing. I highly recommend Black Bear for all your landscaping needs for any home or business.
I hate to resort to negative reviews, but we are very frustrated working with Black Bear. Our landscaping project got off to a good start and our new sidewalk looks great, but some of our shrubs and trees were not planted properly (I know this from experience) and the irrigation that was set up was inadequate. We now have a large dead rhododendron and 1/3 dead white spruce and a system that provides inadequate water. This was pointed out last fall and promises were made to come and fix everything in the spring. But now no one from Black Bear will communicate with us. I cannot recommend to anyone that they work with Black Bear.
