Cameo By Design Painting is a small residential painting outfit based at 35 13th St in Lowell. Its own Houzz listing describes it as "a locally owned and operated Residential Painting company that values honesty," and every customer account on file names the same painter — Gordon — doing the work himself, which is the clearest thing the record says about how this business runs. The praise is specific about preparation, which is what separates a lasting exterior paint job from one that peels. A June 2024 customer had the exterior of an antique colonial painted and described clapboards "scraped and primed and painted like never before," with mould and mildew on the shaded sides treated and cleaned before any paint went on. The same customer noted Gordon texted or called each day to say what the plan was. Another June 2024 review covers a two-story garage under a cape, finished on time. A third describes hiring him across multiple homes and being satisfied every time, and a February 2022 Angi review covers roughly 2,500 sq ft of interior work — 85% of the rooms in the house, trim touch-ups and ceilings included — with the reviewer calling the lines perfect. The most recent word on file is not positive, and it is worth reading before you book. In August 2025 a customer said Gordon had promised to finish kitchen cabinets, four French doors, and kitchen walls and ceiling to their satisfaction, then disputed the punch list on his last day: the customer says he insisted the job was finished and would not come back for touch-ups unless they paid for his gas. That is one customer's account of a single job, not a pattern, but it is the newest one and it is about follow-through at the end of a job rather than the quality of the painting itself. Weigh all of this against how little there is: five reviews across four years, four of them on Google — where the business shows a 4-star average from four ratings — and one on Angi. There is no first-party website on file, no BBB record, and no dedicated profile on either directory; the company appears only as a row inside Angi's and Houzz's category listings. He looks like a good fit for an owner-done exterior repaint where careful scraping, priming and mildew treatment matter, or for a large interior repaint handled by one meticulous painter rather than a crew. Before signing, agree the punch-list process in writing — who inspects, when the touch-up visit happens, and what is held back until it is done — and ask for current proof of insurance and, for any work beyond painting, the relevant registration.
Very disappointed overall. Gordon repeatedly told me that he would finish my kitchen cabinets, four French doors, kitchen walls and ceiling to my complete satisfaction. His last day, he instructed me to check out everything and he would return to do required touch ups. When I told him about the few touch ups needed, he accused me of taking pictures of unfinished work elsewhere...not the areas needing touchups. Crazy!!! He continued to insist (with heightened emotion) that he is the best and the job is finished!!!! Unless I paid for his gas, he would not return to do touch ups!!! I paid him $5150 for the job (labor only). I purchased all paint, joint compound, brushes, thinner for his paint machine. If he had finished the job correctly, I would have had additional paint work for him. I would do it myself before I would allow him to return. I do not deny his talent, but he is a terrible untrustworthy business person who I characterize as an opportunist who assesses a customer's financial situation and increases cost to match his assessment. I have had two other master painters here who have advised that I overpaid, especially for unfinished work! So very disappointing!
Gordon painted the exterior of my antique colonial last summer. He's extremely meticulous - my clapboards were scraped and primed and painted like never before. He also made sure that all of the mold and mildew on the shady bits was treated and cleaned before the paint went on. G is especially responsive in his communications; he always texted or called me to let me know what the day's plans would be. He also does interior and specialty painting, like faux finishes, too.I've seen pictures, and they look sweet.
Gordon is the real deal. He is very meticulous and pays attention to the fine details that others will not. We had him do work for us at multiple homes and were extremely satisfied with the results every time. He turned our houses into our unique homes. He does beautiful work and is a complete professional. Highly recommend.
Awesome Job this guy Gordon painted the exterior of my two story garage under cape and I’m extremely happy with the outcome he was quick and personable got the job done on time and was efficient the house is beautiful and I have no complaints would definitely recommend to anyone
Gordon painted 85% of the rooms in my house. This was roughly 2500 SQ FT. Including trim touch-ups and ceilings. My house is about 6 years old so there were plenty of drywall fixing to be done due to the house settling. I have never met a more thorough painter in my life. The lines were perfect....
