Canton Fence Co. has been building and installing fences around Stoughton since 1967, now run by Richard L. Schiffer Jr. — who bought the company from his father in 2001 — alongside his sons Nicholas and Ryan. The company describes itself as a family-run shop that sells and installs cedar, aluminum, vinyl and chain-link fencing plus gates, at wholesale pricing. Reviewers who actually had fences installed describe work that has held up: one homeowner's fence, installed in 2006, was still "rock-solid" 18 years later; a 2025 review credited Tony's crew with fitting a fence around a yard full of rocks and hills and getting the price right; another described a pool-area fence installed carefully enough not to tear up the surrounding yard. Some customers have stuck with the company for decades — one has treated it as her go-to for fencing since buying her first Canton home in 1992. The last six months tell a different story, though: every review posted since February 2026 is negative, and the complaint isn't the fencing itself but getting anyone to respond — one caller was told an estimator would come out "tomorrow" for three calls running, and several reviews dating back to 2024 describe curt or rude treatment from front-desk and phone staff. A few reviewers who praised installs from years earlier say the company won't return calls for basic follow-up now. Worth knowing before calling: the Boston Globe reported in October 2024 that owner Richard Schiffer was released on personal recognizance after being charged with witness intimidation tied to the Karen Read case. BBB does not factor customer reviews into its letter grade, which is how its A+ rating sits alongside a single published review that isn't about any job at all. Still worth a call for the fence work itself if a homeowner is willing to be persistent about scheduling — but plan to follow up more than once to get an estimate.
“Not Canton Fence”
“Judge Brian K. Walsh released Schiffer, president and owner of Canton Fence Company in Stoughton, on personal recognizance, with the next hearing slated for Nov. 22, according to legal filings.”
It's rubbish, the people who answer the calls
Customer service is awful. So rude. Can’t speak to quality bc couldn’t get anyone to give a quote.
They installed a Fence for me 10+ years ago. Great job. But clearly they don't want my business anymore. I called today (3rd call) to get someone out to LOOK at the fence and give me an ESTIMATE, and for the 3rd time I was told someone would be out tomorrow. When I questioned that, I got told "you can call someone else". So I will. RUDE.
Worst decision I made was to hire them 5 years ago for my fence. The gates stopped working and when I called multiple times to see if they could come out and take a look, they never would call me back. Got someone else to fix their incompetence.
Great to work with. Fence came out awesome.
