Coastal Windows & Exteriors is a Beverly-based window, siding and roofing company large enough to have racked up 890 reviews since 2021 — a 2025 press release marked its 15th anniversary and a national #1 ranking, and it's owned by Stephanie Vanderbilt, named the SBA's Business Person of the Year that same year. The majority of its written record describes the sales and consultation process in detail, and it's consistently strong: reps are named individually across dozens of reviews, walking homeowners through material options and window or siding product lines without, most reviewers say, high pressure. On the finished-project side, accounts describe a roof replaced on short notice, a full siding transformation on a century-old house that neighbors stopped to compliment, and a 2025 job where the crew uncovered pre-existing structural damage and a defective roof mid-project and brought in extra expertise to fix it rather than working around it. Three things are worth knowing before calling. First, a recurring, specific complaint spans 2023 through mid-2026: multiple reviewers, years apart, independently describe Coastal refusing to schedule or conduct an estimate unless a spouse was present, explicitly framed around a woman being treated as unable to decide alone — the same practice described more than once, not a single bad interaction. Second, a handful of 2026 reviews describe real installation misses — a sliding door that arrived damaged, was replaced, and still wouldn't lock after a follow-up visit, and a roof a customer says left the attic improperly vented, with temperatures reported reaching 120 degrees. Third, independent Reddit threads in the North Shore area describe aggressive sales tactics (one commenter said a salesman explained how easily someone could break into the house through the existing patio door as part of the pitch), a quote reported at roughly 3x competitors for a sliding door, and a slow response — several days and multiple calls — to a leak at a Coastal-installed sliding door. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor license is active, and it holds BBB accreditation with an A+ rating. Given the size and pace of this operation, it's worth asking specifically who the installation crew will be, getting a second quote to compare, and confirming in writing what happens if a scheduling policy like the one described above comes up.
“In contrast, coastal windows definitely tries to use sales tactics. A lot of info about their qualifications (like association memberships, annual conferences, etc.) and a lot of parroting.”
“The meeting was fine. The rep spent the first thirty minutes explaining every accolade and professional affiliation the company had. It felt like a lot.”
“to call back immediately if it leaked again so they could better troubleshoot it during the rain. In December, had a squall from the south, and there was a leak at the sliding glass door installed by Coastal. (I knew enough to take video this time around!). It took several days, and 2 more phone calls, for them to even return my call. They finally sent someone out, who also seems very knowledgeable. He believes it isn’t the door, it’s wind driven rain getting past the door’s exterior trim where it meets the siding. They are going to come back and remove the trim and inspect it. They’ll fi”
“Yep coastal - oof. They give car salesman and parking/terminix salesmen a run for their money.”
“Coastal Windows, in Beverly, also has a nice product, but the installation team isn’t quite as good, so I went back to A and A.”
“BEVERLY, Mass., May 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Coastal Windows & Exteriors, a Beverly-based woman-owned remodeling company, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with national recognition.”
Do not work with these misogynists. They refused to schedule an appointment with me because my husband would not be present to “approve” the decision, despite my explicitly confirming that the purchase decision was mine alone as I manage the rental property individually. I spoke with a manager expecting this to be corrected, but he doubled down and asserted the same sexist position. It is not 1950. Women are homeowners, executives, business owners, and primary decision-makers across the economy. Women influence 70-80% of consumer spending, yet this company apparently still believes a husband needs to be present before they will take a woman seriously as a customer. This was offensive, outdated, discriminatory, and completely unprofessional. I would strongly caution other women and homeowners against working with this company.
I had a wonderful experience with Coastal when needing a new roof in a short timeframe. Theo provided a knowledgeable and detailed consultation, without making the visit overwhelming. Theo demonstrated the portions of a system that were important for quality and durability. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a new roof!
Avoid this company. We hired them to install a sliding glass door. The door was damaged when it was installed and they had to come back out to replace the slider. Then the door must’ve been installed wrong because it wouldn’t lock. They came back out once to try to fix it and were unable to do so. And now they won’t respond to service calls for months. They have great friendly salesman who will get you in the door, but The quality of work is questionable and they won’t stand behind their work when things go wrong.
I cannot recommend or support this company. The roofing work performed on my home did not meet accepted industry standards and has resulted in significant and preventable damage. The attic was left improperly vented, causing temperatures to reach 120 degrees, which indicates a clear failure to install adequate ventilation as required by standard roofing practices and manufacturer guidelines. Additionally, the pitch of my kitchen roof was not addressed correctly. A low‑slope roof should have been installed with a rubber membrane, not shingles. The decision to use shingles on a roof with this pitch directly contributed to ice dam formation and subsequent water intrusion into my kitchen ceiling. This is a well‑documented risk associated with shingling low‑slope surfaces, and any qualified roofing professional should have known and disclosed this. These errors have created ongoing structural and moisture‑related issues that will require corrective work at my expense. Based on the deficiencies in workmanship and the failure to follow established roofing standards, I cannot recommend or support Coastal Windows & Exteriors.
Cody and Conner were extremely helpful and knowledgeable when quoting our project (roof, siding, and window replacement). They arrived on time and prepared which made this go even smoother. They walked us through all aspects of material used and any problem areas they noticed. They then worked with us on a solution based on what we were looking to spend. Happy to have chosen Coastal to do this project.
