Colonial Iron Works is a Worcester metal fabrication shop that Houzz says has been building custom ironwork since 1947 — railings, gates, window guards, stair rails, columns, signs and more, all fabricated and installed on-site. Recent reviews, from 2024 and 2026, are consistently positive and name the same person, Sal, as the point of contact: one described custom iron posts and railings as beautiful work delivered promptly at a fair price, with Sal helping design them; another credited Sal and his team with installing three new stair rails across a home's porches and garage entrance, offering helpful advice along the way. A smaller job — extending a fence gate latch rod — got the same personal touch, with Sal walking the customer through it over the phone. The one blemish is older: a 2021 review described a custom handrail that came out with a crooked bottom and a flawed end piece after an otherwise smooth ordering process. Worth asking to see the finished piece in person, or photos of similar completed work, before it's installed. For custom ironwork — railings, gates or stair rails — Colonial Iron Works has a long history in Worcester and a recent run of praise, tempered by one older quality complaint worth keeping in mind.
Fabricated iron posts and railings. They helped me with the design. Beautiful work, prompt service and reasonably priced.
Thanks to Sal and his team, we had a great experience with Colonial Iron works and A G welding! We are very pleased with the 3 new stair rails we now have on our front and back porches and in our garage entrance to our home! Sal was great giving helpful advice when we ordered the railings and the price he quoted was very affordable! The railings were installed 3 weeks later by Mike and team from A G Welders…. They were very efficient and had the job done quickly ! Everyone we spoke to… Sal, Mike and the team were very friendly and helpful as well! Thank you all for a job well done! We definitely will recommend your company to family and friends!
I had to get the rod of the latch for my fence gate extended because we had to move one of the posts to allow larger lawnmower to be able to come in. I called Colonial Iron Works based on their reviews, Sal picked up, he was very nice to talk to. Asked me to send him an image, I did, he told me to bring the existing latch in. Within 2 hours, they welded another rod to it, painted it all for $20. I cannot recommend them high enough. I am one very happy customer. Thank you Sal.
Horrible experience!! At first, all was well. I asked for a custom step hand rail. He came to my home, took measurements, agree on price and design. Took them only a week to built it. Came to install, did so but I noticed the bottom of the rail was not straight, and the end piece would point upward. Aside from that, the paint was horrible as well as the metal finish. Where the end of the rail pointed up, two of the blusters were shorter than the rest. Spoke to Tony, he wanted to give me a $50 discount to forget about it but I declined. I just wanted the job well done. I asked how long it would take to get it fix, he angrily replied, "it would take a month". He said all kinds of things to try getting me to keep the hand rail, but he ended up taking it back. After 3 weeks of not hearing from Tony, I called, spoke with him. He said I could come pick the railing up, he said, he would not install it. He said I could take it, or go find someone else, and start all over. This is just my experience, yours could be satisfactory, but I would use caution.
