Construct Associates, Inc. describes itself on its website as a design/build firm for residential and commercial building in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, specializing in renovation and restoration, and it claims 42 years in business. A 2019 businesswest.com article described its reputation for home renovation and restoration in Western Mass. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, number 150847, is active on the state registry, with Stephen D. Ross as the holder of record. On Google it holds 3.9 stars from 8 ratings; on Houzz, 5.0 from 10. Its BBB page shows an A+ grade. A 2017 customer said Bob Walker, whom they named as General Contractor and Partner, handled the design and build of an extensive renovation of their new home that began in January 2015. That 2017 customer said the estimate was higher than expected, but a detailed spreadsheet explained the costs, and the final costs did not go much over the original estimate. The same 2017 customer said Bob Walker had trouble accepting some of an outside designer's ideas midway through, then accepted the changes. A 2015 customer said Bob Walker and Michael LaMothe helped update a 1968 split level in 2014, moving the kitchen to a three-season porch and converting the old kitchen space into a second full bathroom, a cook's pantry and extra living space, with Terry Heffernan as lead carpenter. A 2014 customer said the company knocked out a wall, installed built-in cabinets and window-seat storage, and replaced the first floor's tile and carpet with wood floors, finishing a bit early. A 2017 customer said Construct designed a wall of windows for their living room and covered furniture and floors with plastic and cloths during the work; an energy audit later showed the windows were installed well with no air leakage. A 2018 customer said Bob Walker and his team re-arranged kitchen cabinetry, built steps off the deck and built an all-new master bath, and that the jobs took approximately three months and came in on budget. A 2022 customer said they were charged more than $1,700 for a renovation design proposal that included several elements they had not asked for, and got no response when they asked for an itemized bill. A 2017 customer said the company left at the end of the job without completing it, had not followed up on items and did not manage the quality of its subs.
“Construct Associates has built a reputation for home renovation and restoration in Western Mass. over the past few decades, which is fortunate these days, since business is surging in that area.”
I want to share my story because I would have been a returning client however I experienced terrible customer service working with Stephen. I’m not sure what’s going on over there, but the proposed designs for my renovation project had several elements that I did not ask for. The interaction between the designer and Stephen was awkward, no one seemed prepared or took my tight deadline for the project seriously. What’s more shocking is what I was charged for the designs I was presented with. When I asked for an itemized bill, there was no response. $1700+ for an incompetent design proposal is ridiculous and unexpected. In my experience, Construct Associates lacked communication, attention to detail and basic customer service.
Construct Associates does quality work with great communication, responsiveness and high standards.
Bob Walker and his team undertook a number of jobs in the home we just moved into. These included re-arranging kitchen cabinetry, building steps off our deck, fine-tuning and enlarging our laundry and garage access, installing doors on our den and most importantly, building an all new master bath. Through all these jobs, Construct's employees and sub-contractors were professional, on-time and clean. All the jobs took approximately 3 months to complete and came in on budget. We were very pleased with the experience.
Stephen Ross is a superb manager and co-owner, and runs his jobs professionally, with integrity, and on-time. He is a good communicator and works with excellent subcontractors. His carpenter Jim Hart was my lead on my most recent job with Construct, and I cannot say enough good things about his attentiveness to detail, quality of work, and ease of interaction. When I do my next renovation, I know who will choose!
Stephen Ross is who I mainly work with at Construct Associates. He is always on call when something goes wrong, and usually helps coordinate subs within the day I call. Construct Associates has a very tight knit group of subs and contractors, and everyone responds in a professional and efficient manner. One of the projects included replacing all the mechanics on a five story building and gutting the main floor into a beautiful loft gallery space. Over the last five years, we have replaced all the new boilers. Their ability to work with you is impressive, and also very important when there are so many projects in the air. I often recommend Construct Associates to anyone looking for a reputable design-build firm.
