Curio Estate Sales & Cleanouts LLC runs estate sales and cleanouts, and the company describes itself as helping people liquidate a family estate, downsize or sell personal property. On Google it holds a 4.4-star rating from 39 ratings, and a local news site, pbn.com, has named Jay Almeida as its owner. A recent customer said the company liquidated an estate for them: they bought some items at good prices, donated a lot, cleaned out the rest and were available on short notice. A 2025 customer called the prices more than fair. A recent customer who hired Jay to sell a late husband's tools said a lot of items remained after two sales, weeks went by with little communication, and the itemized accounting for the second sale was lost. That customer said Jay kept 35% of what he sold, never finished the job, and the contract was ended by the end of July. A recent reviewer said they responded to an ad for a hot dog machine, arrived just before a 9am pickup at an estate sale, and found the machine already gone. A recent reviewer said a coin collection prominently featured in a sale listing's first photos had already been sold privately when they arrived before opening.
“Jay Almeida, second from left, owner of Curio Estate Sales & Cleanouts LLC, haggles prices with the crowd at one of the estate sales his business organized in Cranston.”
As I read the other comments I see a pattern here. Facebook Marketplace and other social media forums are used to advertise individual items. Agreements are made, people drive to the house to find an estate sale under way. In our case we responded to an ad for a hot dog machine. An agreement was made to pick up 9am. We arrived at an estate sale just before 9 and the hot dog machine was already gone. We drove a long way for this exchange and we felt swindled . There were plenty of items reserved with someone’s name on a sticky. Apparently if you’re not an acquaintance, they will not hold to a deal and that is bad business. Very disappointing.
Very disappointing experience. The centerpiece of an estate sale was a coin collection, prominently featured in the first photos of the listing. I arrived plenty of time before opening and once inside, I was told the coins had already been sold to someone who had apparently contacted the organizers beforehand and negotiated a private sale. Selling something beforehand is one thing. Continuing to prominently advertise it as the main attraction of the sale without marking it as sold is another. At the very least it should have been removed from the listing or clearly stated that items could be privately purchased before the sale. I completely understand that businesses need to make money, but wasting customers time and bringing them to a sale under misleading circumstances is not a great way to do it. At least I didn’t have to drive far to find out this will be my first and last curio sale.
If I could give zero stars I would. I hired Jay Curio to handle the sale of my late husband’s tools because Jay, the owner told me he had extensive experience selling tools and had the connections to sell everything. I asked what happens if everything doesn’t sell during the one day sale and he told me he was sure it would because he had a lot of connections with people who purchase tools but he agreed and added in the contract that if anything was left, he would continue working to sell those items that remained and clean up any left over items that were not of value and couldn’t be sold. The sale was held on April 29 but a lot of items remained including a large toolbox and a smaller one and a lot of tools. A second sale happened a couple of weeks later but even after that there were still the two toolboxes and many tools left to sell. After the two sales communication became very frustrating. Weeks went by with no progress and little communication. I repeatedly had to reach out to ask what was happening, and responses often came days later. He kept telling me he was so busy. I was told there was someone interested in buying some of the remaining tools, but that Jay didn’t have any time to meet with the potential buyer. None of the items were listed anywhere and I could see no effort being made to sell them. The large toolbox was listed on marketplace only after I repeatedly asked for something to be done. The rest of what was left was never listed anywhere. As you can see from my photo of the text screenshot, this was the theme, I would text about my frustration with the lack of communication and nothing being done and his response was always how busy he is. He would apologize and then say he would call me or get down there to take more pictures or meet one of his connections down there then zero follow through. In June Jay finally settled up with me for what he owed me so far but when I asked for the itemized accounting with what sold for what at the sales, I was told he lost it for the second sale and only had the one from the first sale. This was unacceptable to me. By the end of July, after nearly three months of no progress and failed efforts to communicate, I decided to end the contract. Now I am left having to try and sell what’s left myself. I hired Jay because I didn’t have the time or knowledge to sell these items and I expected the agreed-upon follow-up efforts to actually happen. After ending the contract, I asked again for the accounting from the first sale, which he still hadn’t sent and I still have yet to receive it despite following up. I read lots of positive reviews which was another reason I decided to hire Jay Curio but My experience was disappointing to say the least and while grieving the loss of my husband this was very stressful to deal with. Jay kept 35% of what he sold and never finished the job. In addition, I have no paperwork to know for sure what sold for how much. If you are looking for a trustworthy, responsive, and organized professional for your estate sale I would keep looking.
Excellent job liquidating an estate for us. They bought some stuff at good prices, donated lots of stuff (which we liked) and cleaned out the rest very efficiently. Jay was pleasant to work with and his staff were all pleasant, respectful and hard working. They were also available on short notice, unlike many/most other liquidators. I definitely recomend them if you are looking for an estate liquidator.
