David Carlson Carpentry, based in Ipswich on Massachusetts's North Shore, has built a small but spotless reputation: nine Google reviews, every one five stars, with "efficient" and "quality" turning up again and again. David Carlson started the company in 2022 after a decade as lead carpenter and site supervisor for one of the area's larger builders, and the business is owner-operated by Carlson himself, per its own site. The two most recent reviews on file give the clearest look at current work. In June, a homeowner had their front stairs rebuilt and came away most impressed by the process — the job stayed on schedule and left no debris behind. In May, another had Carlson replace failing deck corner boards and lattice and swap horizontal deck rails for vertical balusters, calling the price reasonable and the turnaround quick. Neither review raises a single complaint. That pattern holds across the fuller history too. Reviews stretching back to late 2025, gathered across Google and the company's own site, describe finish carpentry, custom cabinetry, and larger renovation and addition work, and all of them land at five stars — there's no cluster of complaints anywhere to weigh against the praise. Its Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor license (167695) is verified active with the state, which matters given the scope of work reviewers describe — this isn't a handyman-only operation. One thing worth asking about directly: the company's site describes a sole operator, but reviews of larger jobs mention "his team" or "the crew" working alongside him, so it's not entirely clear who's on-site day to day for a bigger renovation versus a smaller carpentry job. For a well-defined project — a rebuilt staircase, a reworked deck, custom built-ins — the five-star pattern here is deep enough, on a still-modest nine reviews, to be a reasonable bet; for something larger, ask for recent photos or a reference from a comparable job before booking.

I used David Carlson Carpentry to rebuild my front stairs. I can honestly say that I was more than impressed with the finished product. David worked efficiently with no sacrifice to quality. In addition to exceeding my expectations for the project timeline, there was not a trace of debris from the work left remaining. Their cleanliness was a courteous touch that did not go unnoticed.

We had David replace the corner boards and lattice beneath our deck and also replace our horizontal deck hand rails and lattice with vertical balusters. He did an excellent job, worked quickly, and did it for a very reasonable price. I'd highly recommend David for your next carpentry project!

Dave and his team did fantastic work on an addition/renovation of my 100+ year old house in Beverly. Like any project, as soon as we got into it, the scope of work required increased. Dave helped me make decisions that were both good for the project in the short-term and the right choices for the house in the longterm. I'm really satisfied and highly recommend him. Don't take my word for it, though. My neighbor is a retired builder—in the trade for 35 years. He watched Dave and the crew very closely. When the framing was done, this neighbor told me, "your guy knows what he's doing."
