David Carlson Carpentry is a one-person, north-shore Massachusetts shop — David Carlson himself, out on every job — that the company says he started in 2022 after a decade as lead carpenter and site supervisor for one of the area's established builders. Its work runs from small trim jobs to full-scale renovations of century-old homes. The most striking review describes a 2025 addition/renovation of a 100-plus-year-old Beverly house, where the customer's neighbor — a retired builder with 35 years in the trade — watched the crew work and told the homeowner 'your guy knows what he's doing' after seeing the framing. A separate 2025 review described a roughly six-month renovation in Wenham that touched nearly every room: moving stairs, building custom cabinets, gutting the kitchen and multiple bathrooms, and running new floors, electrical, and plumbing. A June 2026 review described a front-stairs rebuild finished ahead of schedule with no debris left behind, and a May 2026 review described new deck corner boards, lattice, and vertical-baluster railings done quickly at a reasonable price. Several reviewers are repeat or long-standing clients — one says they've worked with Dave for more than twenty years — and the recurring theme across the record is a carpenter who also manages full projects: scoping decisions, coordinating trades, and communicating through delays and scope changes rather than just executing a spec. His Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active. Anyone with an older or unusual house — the kind of project where surprises show up mid-job — looks like the natural fit here, given how often that scenario comes up in his own reviews.
I used David Carlson Carpentry to rebuild my front stairs. I can honestly say that I was more than impressed with the finished product. David worked efficiently with no sacrifice to quality. In addition to exceeding my expectations for the project timeline, there was not a trace of debris from the work left remaining. Their cleanliness was a courteous touch that did not go unnoticed.
We had David replace the corner boards and lattice beneath our deck and also replace our horizontal deck hand rails and lattice with vertical balusters. He did an excellent job, worked quickly, and did it for a very reasonable price. I'd highly recommend David for your next carpentry project!
Unicorn! David Carlson is the BEST! Using a baseball anaolgy for a super-star, David Carlson is a Five Tool player. And David has 5,000 tools! You can't find a contractor with his skills: Good Communication, Great Innovation and design eye, Master Carpenter, Intiutive and accurate on budget; and great at managing people.
We have worked with Dave many times and we are always impressed with his level of skill. He is attentive to detail and thorough in his work. He is able to understand vision and design and blend that with functionality.
Dave and his team did fantastic work on an addition/renovation of my 100+ year old house in Beverly. Like any project, as soon as we got into it, the scope of work required increased. Dave helped me make decisions that were both good for the project in the short-term and the right choices for the house in the longterm. I'm really satisfied and highly recommend him. Don't take my word for it, though. My neighbor is a retired builder—in the trade for 35 years. He watched Dave and the crew very closely. When the framing was done, this neighbor told me, "your guy knows what he's doing."
