Effective Plumbing is a Norwalk plumbing company with 35 Google ratings averaging 4.2 stars and an A+ grade on its Better Business Bureau page. A recent customer emailed John photos of an old water heater and got clear pricing on a 6-year and a 10-year AO Smith unit. That customer said two men arrived on a Wednesday morning with no warning, and that the men who did the installation were polite and courteous. The customer also said John insisted on an extra charge for adding unions, and that the original copper pressure-relief discharge pipe had been replaced with plastic; when the customer called to ask why, John became defensive and rude. A 2026 customer said a pipe was leaking water into the dining room, they were there in an hour, and it was fixed and done in short order. A 2025 customer said they called one day and the company was there the next morning to fix a bathroom sink. A 2024 customer said a kitchen sink leaking on a Saturday morning was diagnosed and fixed within an hour, and the kitchen was left clean. In a 2023 review, a customer described plumbing work on an 1865 building in Norwalk converted into residential apartments and named John as the owner. A 2025 customer who needed a new outdoor faucet said two crews spent time in the crawl space before the faucet was twisted off and replaced, and that they were charged $295 for a part that costs $95. A 2025 reviewer said they could not get an appointment booked and called the staff rude and sarcastic. A 2022 reviewer said a simple request not to park where it blocked driveway access was met with rudeness. It holds an active Connecticut P1 plumbing licence, PLM.0278517-P1, held by Effective Plumbing LLC.
Everything started off fine with Effective Plumbing. John responded quickly to my email, reviewed the photos of my old water heater, and gave me clear pricing on a 6 year vs. 10 year AO Smith unit, so I opted for the 10 year for peace of mind. The scheduling process did not go as smoothly. He stated that he would follow up to see if we could get the job done sooner, i.e., on Wednesday, but there was no response. Two men simply arrived at my house on Wednesday morning with no warning prior to their arrival, which caused small problems with managing my workday. I could have waited for Thursday as it wasn’t an immediate rush, but just a confirmation would’ve been nice. The gentlemen who performed the installation were polite and courteous during the installation process, but John's customer service and professionalism were lacking. When I asked about adding unions while the pipes were already being cut, John insisted on an extra charge and responded with an arrogant remark about being “cheaper than everybody else,” instead of explaining the cost difference in a professional way. I was already on a budget and with the additional attitude, I really didn't care enough to pay the extra for unions. After the install, I noticed my original copper pressure‑relief discharge pipe had been replaced with plastic, and when I called to understand why, John immediately became defensive, rude, and sarcastic about me “doing research” and me “being an expert,” rather than calmly explaining the material choice, and instead made further rude remarks. From what I’ve read, copper was the usual approved material for water‑heater relief discharge piping, so swapping copper for plastic without a clear explanation was concerning. Although I have a better idea now, no one was able to explain why this is the case. As a first‑time homeowner trying to learn, I don’t appreciate attitude or defensiveness when I ask basic questions. Because of the inconsistent communication and unprofessional tone, I do not recommend this business.
Had a pipe that was leaking water into my dining room, John called back right away (told me about the waiting list, he said he could call someone and could I send a picture) they were here in an hour! It was fixed and done in short order, they did some outside work and under the kitchen sink last summer, great company, I will call them every time! Picture of my new (unleaking pipe)
John is a great guy and does great business. A+
