Jonathan Marston built his first water feature at 18, for his grandparents. The company he opened in Boston in 2017 does one thing: koi ponds, waterfalls, streams and fountains, built to look like they were always there. FallingWater Scapes works out of Dover and, by its own account, covers Greater Boston — its Houzz profile lists close to fifty towns from Cambridge out to Franklin, with typical jobs running $4,500 to $35,000. Marston is the owner and designer. The company says it is a Master Certified Aquascape Contractor and that Pond Trade Magazine named its work best pondless waterfall in the country in 2022 and best small project in 2021. Twenty-five reviews since 2018, every one of them five stars, and what they describe is unusually consistent. In a December 2025 review, a homeowner said a plain patch of ground off a patio became something they watched change through fall and into winter, with ice forming under the spillways — and mentioned progress videos arriving daily. A 2022 customer wrote that Marston came out to quote, then made a video explaining the plan with reference pictures before any work started. A nonprofit director in Woburn hired him in 2022 to design and build two memorial fountains, and said he came to the dedication. The maintenance side draws the same kind of detail. A 2023 customer whose small fish pond was overdue for cleaning said he scrubbed it cleaner than any pond company had managed before, fixed a problem with the pump housing so the waterfall ran at full strength, cleared overgrown vegetation and added beneficial bacteria — the extras at no charge. Another, writing in 2022, had maintained a large feature themselves for years and said his crew did more in one day than they could over several, then picked a variable-flow, more efficient pump when theirs died. Two more customers describe several years of annual maintenance. He travels when a client asks. A 2026 reviewer researching waterfall contractors from upstate New York hired him for their Martha's Vineyard place after finding a Nantucket job of his, and a Southern California homeowner hired him across the country for a koi pond. Scope and budget are what to settle first. This is design-and-build work at project prices, with a paid on-site design stage, so pin down what the consultation covers and where your job sits in that $4,500-$35,000 range. For a pond, waterfall or fountain built or brought back to life — rather than general yard work — this is a specialist, and the written history behind that runs deep and current.
As my husband and I reflect on our waterfall experience with Jonathan and his team, we think about how it all began. We were driving back from our summer cottage on Martha's Vineyard to our home in upstate New York. I was continuing to research waterfall contractors when I came across FallingWater Scapes. I started reading the reviews and to my surprise, I learned that Jonathan had completed a water feature on Nantucket, a small island similar to Martha's Vineyard. We spoke with Jonathan, and he was willing to come to our island residence to discuss the project. From the moment we spoke, we were impressed with Jonathan's depth of knowledge about creating natural looking waterfalls. He listened to our ideas while adding a few of his own meticulously planning out every detail. We hired Jonathan, and we were beyond excited that our desire to have a waterfall on our property was finally going to become a reality. Jonathan was willing to take on the challenges to travel to Martha's Vineyard, make several ferry reservations to bring over all of his heavy equipment, and finally find a place to stay as our project was going to take a few months to complete. Without a doubt, Jonathan handled these logistical challenges with finesse. He even became good friends with the owner of the stone yard on the island giving him access to the property on a Sunday, so he could carefully choose and tag specific boulders to use for our water feature. Working with Jonathan was amazing! His easy going nature and friendly personality made it a joy to have him on our property. Even our German Shepherd, Lucca, looked forward to his arrival each day. His dedication and work ethic were impressive! His passion for his work is evident, carefully placing each boulder in the right location to create the best flow of cascading water over each one. As my husband and I were looking at the rocks he had chosen, there was one that caught my eye in particular. I mentioned this to Jonathan not thinking that he would remember our conversation given his busy work schedule. To my surprise, he placed this rock in a special location where we could sit and view the waterfall from above. This is the kind of guy Jonathan is, taking the time to get to know his clients. Our waterfall looks spectacular! At night, the lights in the feature reflect against the falling water creating a breathtaking view. We would highly recommend Jonathan to anyone who is considering adding a water feature to their property. He is truly the best!
John solved my fountain’s problem perfectly, thank you very much!
My husband and had always dreamed of having a koi pond. When we purchased our recent home we decided to pursue this dream and I started researching natural koi ponds in-depth. We came across Jonathan's work. The more I looked, the more I realized that no one else came even close to his artistry when it comes to water features. So even though we are located in SoCal, we hired him from across the nation to build our dream pond. We opened the entire backyard up to him so he would have a blank canvas. We knew that whatever he would build for us would be stunning. Despite the geographical challenges of doing a project across the nation with limited space and one of the most complex designs, we are in disbelief how beautiful everything turned out. He is meticulous and so hardworking and diligent - he is extremely conscientious in everything he does. Watching him select and evaluate every rock as he places it just right. He and his crew have been an absolute joy - every step of the way. We feel so privileged to have one of Jonathan's master pieces in our backyard. If you are considering a natural looking water feature do it right the first time; we highly recommend you engage FallingWater Scapes. You would be doing yourself a disservice not to. Jonathan, thank you so very much for making our backyard paradise come true.
Hiring Jonathan Marston of Fallingwater Scapes was among the best landscaping decisions I have ever made. He turned a plain patch of ground off a patio into a breathtaking retreat. Jonathan finished the project in late summer, so I have had the pleasure of seeing it through Fall and now early Winter. The water feature’s character changes with the shifting of the light, and now, since the cold snap, fantastic ice formations are growing under the spillways. It is different and beautiful every day. Jonathan was a pleasure to work with, and I appreciated his progress videos that I received every day during construction. He is incredibly creative, hard working, and thoughtful. He clearly enjoys what he does, and it shows in his work. I enthusiastically recommend Fallingwater Scapes and look forward to working with Jonathan again.
Professional, articulate, high quality craftsmen are far and few between. Jonathan is one of them and his company represents that. The level of care to detail that he takes in his work is incredibly admirable. I have always seen him striving to do what is right and create a perfect atmosphere that meets his clients desires. Ultimately, his features have truly stunning quality that goes beyond what a basic landscaper could do. Well done Fallingwater Scapes! looking forward to working with you again
