Frank Gonsalves has been doing masonry work under his own name in Lowell for 26 years, according to his BBB profile — a one-person operation working out of 158 Woburn Street. His Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active. The strongest thread through his reviews is chimney work: rebuilding, patching, tile repair, brick-matching — the kind of job people specifically call a mason for rather than a general contractor. In a 2021 review, one customer described getting quotes from three masons for chimney repair and choosing Gonsalves for the best price, then watching him match the old brick so well "it's hard to tell that a portion of the chimney was rebuilt." Others from the same year describe repeat work: chimney cap and tile repairs, replaced steps and a bulkhead, and stucco on a garage foundation for one customer; a fireplace, a small retaining wall, and stairs for another. A 2023 review described a chimney-patching job as professional and reasonably priced, and a 2024 review credited him with finishing a granite front-path repair in two days that "would have taken an entire summer" to do alone. Pricing comes up unprompted across several of these years, with customers calling it fair or reasonable rather than cheap. His written history runs from 2021 to 2024, with nothing more recent on file. One 2024 review is worth flagging on its own: a caller says Gonsalves hung up on them after they asked whether he was licensed — worth raising directly, especially since his home improvement contractor registration is in fact active and verifiable. His BBB profile lists him as not accredited and not rated, which BBB attributes to insufficient information rather than any complaint history. For chimney repair, brick-matching, or smaller masonry jobs like steps and retaining walls around Lowell, Gonsalves's history is long and mostly detailed and positive — but it's also aged, so it's worth confirming he's still taking on work and getting a current reference before booking.
Asked if he was licenced and he hung up on me.
Frank has recently completed two jobs repairing both a path and a chimney for me. His work is excellent, very fairly priced, and quick. If I fixed the path it would have taken me an entire summer, it took Frank two days!
Excellent Mason! Would recommend
I hired Frank for a small job patching a chimney. He was great to deal with, professional and the cost was reasonable. I will hire him for future jobs.
Frank did an excellent job of explaining the build process, did magnificent work on the job, and explained how to care for the end product. Very consistent and reliable.
