Come home to no heat on Christmas Day and GEM is the kind of outfit that can actually do something about it: a December 2025 customer had a technician at the house within the hour, on the holiday, for a $199 emergency call. Get a big quote from them, though, and more than one customer would tell you to price it elsewhere first. GEM is a large, multi-branch home services company — HVAC, plumbing and electrical across Rhode Island, Massachusetts and parts of Connecticut and New Hampshire — with a Massachusetts base in Raynham, and it dates itself to 1949, started by Larry Sr. and Gloria Gemma. Its Massachusetts plumbing and HVAC licences are active, held by the company and by Leonard Gemma. The Better Business Bureau grades it A- and lists it as accredited, with 49 complaints on file as of August 2026. Depth and speed are the reasons to call. A gas steam boiler that the installing company had left worse got a person on the phone immediately and a technician the same day in January 2026. When a well pump died on Thanksgiving evening in 2025, the crew came the next day, found the pressure tank gone too, and — supply houses shut for the weekend — booked Monday morning and finished in under a day. In September 2025 a technician traced an oil burner failure to electrodes the previous company had misaligned and an inefficient burner tip, and cleaned the oil supply line while there. An August 2026 customer had a new furnace and water heater in on a four-day turnaround, against the month other vendors were quoting. Price is where the complaints gather, and they are recent. In August 2026 a customer called $3,500 to $3,800 for a standard electric water heater outrageously high and said that, as a senior citizen, they felt taken advantage of. That same month a tenant said their landlord was charged $600 for a two-and-a-half-hour visit that left the heat off, along with a quote of almost $6,000 in repairs — another company did the work for under $1,000. A June 2026 customer said a dripping shower head was written up as a full replacement when the cartridge was the faulty part. Two others paid and stayed broken: $348 for two visits to a combi-boiler in April 2026, and over $2,000 for two days of troubleshooting on an eight-year-old outdoor A/C unit in March 2025. If you need someone at the door tonight, or a big install done in days rather than a month, this is a company with the staff to do it. Before approving anything past a service call, get the diagnosis in writing with the part it names, and take a second quote on any replacement — that is the exact step their unhappy customers wish they had taken.
