Gillis Landscape Garden Center

Gillis Landscape Garden Center is a Berlin nursery-and-landscaping business that's been family-run since 1977, founded by brothers Pete and Matt Gillis, both UMass Amherst-trained in environmental design. It carries a BBB A+ rating, though it isn't a BBB-accredited member. The reviews split cleanly between the garden center and the installation side. On the retail side, regulars describe a well-stocked nursery with competitively priced mulch, plants and supplies, and friendly, helpful staff. On installation jobs, the pattern is speed and follow-through: a backyard patio and landscaping project that reviewers say exceeded expectations and turned out nicer than planned, and a separate patio addition called fast, professional and still holding up well years later. The company's own site states a one-year warranty on its installations. Two reviews break from that record. One 2025 customer describes a rude staff interaction on their first nursery visit and says they won't be back. Separately, a 2024 review describes discussing a landscaping job that the company then never showed up for and stopped answering calls about — a different failure mode than the installation reviews above, which are all about completed work. The five most recent reviews, spanning the last six months, are entirely positive, which lines up with the longer-run pattern here: solid installation work and a well-liked garden center, with the two negative accounts being about responsiveness and one staff interaction rather than the quality of finished landscaping.
