Harrop & Son Remodeling describes itself on HomeAdvisor as a family owned and operated additions and remodeling company in Johnston, Rhode Island, with over 20 years of experience in the home improvement trade. In a 2016 review, a customer said they hired Tom Harrop for a basement and double bathroom remodel; the initial contract covered finishing a basement, a first floor bathroom remodel and painting, and was later extended to a complete demo and remodel of the upstairs second bath. A 2018 customer said Tom quoted a complete basement remodel at half the price of the competition with a full bathroom included, and that the whole remodel was kept within the quoted price. A 2020 customer described a 1400 sq ft basement, an old doctor's office, that needed a complete rip, and said the work kept to schedule. A 2015 customer said Tom came to their house 15 minutes after a call about a burst pipe and reinstalled insulation, drywall, doors and lights. A 2015 reviewer said Tom and his crew replaced aged French doors with a slider. In a 2014 review, a customer said they hired the company for framing work, then vinyl siding with trim work, then a kitchen remodel. A 2025 customer who hired Tom Harrop for kitchen cabinets, vinyl flooring, plastering, ceiling lighting and a shiplap ceiling praised the shiplap ceiling and lighting, but said the floors had uneven spots and gaps, the plastering had peeling paint, and a paid-for under-sink heater was never received. A 2020 customer said the company stopped responding the day before it promised to arrive. A 2019 customer said they were pleased with the end result but had to initiate all communication, and that Tom had not come back to fix two defective wood rails more than 8 months after the project.
He hired Tom Harrop to install kitchen cabinets and a heater under the kitchen sink, vinal flooring, plastering in a small area, add ceiling lighting and a shiplap ceiling. Once the work was done I asked Tom to do a walk through and he refused saying he stood behind his empoyees work. Here are the PROs and CONs. PROs: 1.) work was completed in a timely fashion 2) they did a beautiful job on the shiplap ceiling and lighting. CONs: 1) The brand new white cabinets had some nicks requiring paint touch up. 2) Terrible job on the floors! Uneven spots, lengths are uneven at the edges, gaps showing, no finish work. Terrible job!! 3) plastering looks like it wasn't even done! And there is some peeling of paint on the plaster job. Terrible job!!! 4) we were promised and paid for an under the kitchen sink heater which we never received. Called multiple times with no response. Lesson learned, will never use Tom Harrop again!!
This was a huge job - the basement is 1400 sq ft and needed a complete rip (it was an old doctorâ s office), new plans were drawn up and they handled everything from start to finish. The work was excellent and they kept to schedule. Really happy with the outcome of the project and would definitely recommend.
I spoke with them about the project, they requested pictures and a detailed explanation about it (which I provided) and they promised to be able to complete it promptly. When I checked in with them the day before they promised to arrive they stopped responding and disappeared completely
Throughout the years I have used many contractors for home improvement projects and Tom was by far the best. Totally satisfied with the work and he went above expectations.
Tom worked with us to ensure our needs were met in the design and throughout the construction project and we are pleased with the end result but the communication throughout the process was challenging. We had to initiate all communication and he did not keep us in the loop frequently enough. Still has not come back to fix two defective wood rails after completing the project over 8 months ago. Very frustrating experience.
