J&F Construction is a Medford general contractor built around the bigger jobs — additions, dormers, condo conversions and ground-up custom homes, on houses and commercial buildings alike. The company tells its own story as a family one: a father-and-son team, Jose F. Silva and Fernando J. Silva, who it says started the firm in 2000 and count roughly 25 years at it, with more than 50 years of construction experience between them. Those are J&F's words about itself, not an independent account. Outside its own site, what turns up is paperwork. A federal PPP loan of $111,472 was approved in January 2021, originated by Naveo Credit Union, and the company carries a business registration in Rhode Island. J&F also says it is licensed and registered in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island — again the company's claim, not something confirmed against a state registry here. If they're on your list for an addition or a condo conversion, get the Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration and construction supervisor numbers in writing and check them yourself, and ask for two or three recent local jobs you can call.
