J and R Fine Landscaping is a family-run outfit in Andover led by owner Jim Goddard, doing hardscape-heavy landscaping work — paver patios, walkways, stonework, water features and outdoor lighting — alongside grading, lawn installation and tree removal. BBB records put it at a sole proprietorship dating to January 2004, with ten employees. The written record is thin but genuinely mixed. In a 2022 Angi review, a customer said Jim and his crew did a great job turning an unusable spot under their deck into a patio the family now enjoys. A 2023 review tells a rougher story: a patio installed incorrectly and a wait of nearly three months before a fix that still left the customer unsatisfied — the owner posted a public response to that complaint on Angi and HomeAdvisor. An older 2011 review is similarly split: the tree work itself was fine, but the customer said heavy objects weren't put back and felt they'd overpaid. A 2010 magazine piece on North Shore landscaping named the company as one of the few in the area working with Goshen stone, a material native to western Massachusetts — and Houzz lists ten years as a Unilock Certified Contractor, pointing to real hardscaping expertise. Business listings don't fully agree on where the company is based — BBB and Houzz show an Andover address, while Angi and HomeAdvisor list one in Tewksbury — worth a quick confirmation before booking.

“Goshen stone, indigenous to western Massachusetts, is one such material, and J and R is one of just a few companies on the North Shore that use it.”
Zero stars were not an option so I had to put 1. Do not hire. We hired to install a patio and a few other things. Patio was done incorrectly. When we approached them to fix it took almost 3 months before they actually came out to fix and we are still not satisfied. Save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere.
Jim and his team did a great job installing the patio under my deck. An area that was unusable prior to the work being done is now a great area for us to sit under our deck out of the sun and really enjoy beautiful days.

They did a good job with the tree work, but did not put a number of heavy objects back where I found them. I was also told that I overpaid.
