Two addresses, three different answers about how long they have been at it, and one 2023 patio that went wrong — J and R Fine Landscaping takes some untangling. The company works out of Andover, where its BBB page lists a sole proprietorship started in 2004 with about ten employees under Jim Goddard; Angi and HomeAdvisor carry a Tewksbury address for the same firm. What people hire them for is hardscape — paver patios and walkways, stonework, fire pits, water features and outdoor lighting — alongside grading, lawn installation and tree and stump removal. The written history is short and split. On Angi and HomeAdvisor, which mirror the same five reviews, the average sits at 2.8. The heaviest of them is a 2023 complaint: a homeowner said the patio was installed incorrectly, that it took almost three months before the crew came back, and that the result still was not right. The owner posted a public rebuttal on both sites. That same review is the only one Houzz carries, which is why its Houzz page reads 1.0. Against that, a 2022 customer described a $10,600 patio built under a deck that turned an unusable spot into somewhere they could sit — the most specific praise anyone has written about them. A 2011 reviewer said the tree work itself was good, but that heavy objects were left out of place and the bill felt high. Northshore Magazine, writing in 2010, called J and R one of just a few companies on the North Shore working with Goshen stone. Ask about the 2023 patio directly. It is recent enough to matter and specific enough to be worth a conversation, and the owner's answer sits on the same public page. Pin down who would actually be on your job and what happens if something needs redoing. Houzz puts typical jobs between $2,000 and $40,000, so get the scope in writing before anyone breaks ground. For a paver patio or a stone walkway around Andover and Tewksbury, this is work they have been doing for years, and their Andover BBB page carries an A+. Just go in with that 2023 job in mind, and note that nobody has written publicly about them since.
“Goshen stone, indigenous to western Massachusetts, is one such material, and J and R is one of just a few companies on the North Shore that use it.”
Zero stars were not an option so I had to put 1. Do not hire. We hired to install a patio and a few other things. Patio was done incorrectly. When we approached them to fix it took almost 3 months before they actually came out to fix and we are still not satisfied. Save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere.
Jim and his team did a great job installing the patio under my deck. An area that was unusable prior to the work being done is now a great area for us to sit under our deck out of the sun and really enjoy beautiful days.
They did a good job with the tree work, but did not put a number of heavy objects back where I found them. I was also told that I overpaid.
