J.J. Galvin Electric is a family-run Newton, Massachusetts electrical contractor founded in 1985 by James Galvin; after he died in 2008 his wife Peggy took over, and their son Sean has run daily operations for more than 15 years since, according to the company's own site. The written reviews on file run from 2012 to 2019 rather than more recently, but they describe substantial work. In a 2012 review, a homeowner said Galvin rewired an entire house that still had knob-and-tube wiring along with some earlier do-it-yourself work, and added recessed and outdoor security lighting plus a mounted TV with hidden components. A 2017 review described a full home renovation with the crew called punctual, clean, and polite. In a 2019 review, a homeowner who worked with Sean directly on custom lighting design during a remodel called the experience among the best of the many electrical companies they'd used. One older record is worth surfacing directly: a court filing from 1998 describes a judgment entered in April 1997 for $23,372.32 against 'James Galvin Electric Company, Inc.,' at what a separate court record lists as this business's Newton, Massachusetts address — the same city the business operates from today. No further detail on the underlying dispute is available. Houzz lists a license number (17326A) for the business and a Women Owned Business badge; the company's own site describes it as family-owned, currently run by Sean Galvin with his wife. For an electrical job in the Newton area from a long-running family shop, the reviews on file — though several years old — describe careful, well-communicated work; worth asking directly about that 1997 judgment and confirming the license is current before hiring.
Typical Greater Boston range for this kind of work, from regional averages — not a quote from J.J. Galvin Electric. Use it to sanity-check bids, then get the real number in writing.
Standard receptacle swaps — a new dedicated circuit is a bigger job ($350–$750).
Flush mounts, pendants, chandeliers — hung on existing boxes.

Highly recommend Galvin Electric. They worked side by side with my contractor during my remodel over the summer. Sean helped me design the custom lighting and pick all the appropriate switching. Can’t go wrong with them. I have dealt with many electrical companies and this was by far my most pleasant experience I will use them for all future electrical needs !

I hired Galvin to complete a full home renovation and we were very impressed with the work. They were punctual, clean, and polite. Definitely will be using them for service calls and any future projects that come up.
Galvin rewired our entire house (formally knob and tube + some poor DIY work) and also installed recessed lighting in the kitchen and livingroom as well as additional security lighting outside, overhead lighting in the basement, and mounted our TV w/ components hidden from view in a bookshelf on an opposite wall. They were excellent! Extrememly helpful in making receommendations around lighting, outet/switch placement, etc. Very nice and respectful crew. Prices were also very reasonable. We would hire them again in a hearbeat.
