J.P. McCurdy Electrical Services is a Lynn-based electrical contractor with a large footprint on the North Shore — Google shows 4.9 stars from 66 ratings, and Angi carries 453 ratings averaging 4.5 stars. The same technicians keep showing up across years of reviews — Einstein and his son Caleb, Chris, Brandon, Victor, Alex, Joe — alongside owners John and Jack McCurdy, who reviewers say come out personally to scope bigger jobs. Recent reviews keep landing on the same specifics: knob-and-tube wiring removed from century-old Victorians, panel upgrades to 100-amp service with dedicated EV-charger circuits, breaker diagnostics solved same-day, and crews that clean up thoroughly and explain the work as they go. Customers name the same few electricians over and over — Einstein and Caleb, in particular, show up in dozens of reviews for everything from a tripped breaker fixed within a day of the call to smoke-detector and light-fixture work — and the office staff (Beatriz, Judy, Liz) get singled out almost as often as the crews for keeping customers informed. Three accounts complicate that picture, though, and together they're worth taking seriously. Two billing complaints — one from May 2026, another from September 2025 — describe being charged multiple hours, in one case over $450, for a diagnostic visit where no repair work was performed or requested, and both mention the company threatening small-claims court over the unpaid bill. Separately, in a 2022 review, a customer said that while McCurdy was checking an old three-decker for knob-and-tube wiring, something they did knocked out the building's heat in the middle of winter; McCurdy wouldn't pay to fix it or file an insurance claim, leaving the customer to cover roughly $1,000 to have the furnace rewired themselves. And in an August 2025 Nextdoor post, a Beverly resident who'd already posted about a bad experience said they'd since heard from several other people describing similar problems. None of that shows up as a pattern in the current run of five-star reviews, and it may well be limited to specific jobs or circumstances — but given how the same billing complaint has now surfaced twice, it's worth asking for a firm not-to-exceed estimate in writing before any diagnostic visit, especially for smaller jobs.
“And, just to reiterate: never hire McCurdy Electric. Since I posted about my experiences with them, I've received a few DMs and comments from others who had similar experiences.”
JP McCurdy Electrical Services is an exceptional operation with consistently excellent service and highly skilled electricians. We have relied on McCurdy over time to remove all the active knob and tube wiring in our 130-year-old Victorian home, do all the electrical work for our kitchen remodel, including providing enough power for our new induction stove, and installing ceiling fans and light fixtures (eg. wall sconces). Foreman Joe Costain runs a tight and skilled crew. Beatriz and Judy are highly responsive in the front office. Most recently, electricians Einstein and Caleb did fabulous detective work to figure out why one of our outlets was dead. Many thanks to electricians Joe Cross and Brandon Kent for their great work as well!
Joe and Brandon were great - efficient, effective, and personable! Would absolutely recommend to anyone who needs a dependable electrician.
I appreciate the work that Einsteen did. He’s professional, super knowledgeable and very personable. He does excellent work!
McCurdy Electrical Services have been our electricians for the past 20 years and we wouldn't go anywhere else. They are quick to respond and very knowledgeable. They were just here doing more work. Not only did they do a great job, but they were respectful (we have a cats so they closed doors as needed) and as unobtrusive as possible. We highly recommend them.
Very professional and knowledgeable. Also - very neat and personable. i have had many experiences with electricians but this was the best. The office staff were superb and friendly. Curt from Arlington.
