Two names come up in almost every review of this Marblehead firm: John and Linda. J. White Handyman, Design & Construction works the North Shore out of Marblehead, and the pairing is the point — Linda handles design and client communication, John and, in more recent accounts, his son Dylan do the building. Houzz rates them 5.0 across 26 reviews, the company puts a typical job at $25,000 to $125,000, and its project galleries run from a Swampscott wine cellar and a Marblehead cupola restoration to a historic-house mudroom and a full basement renovation. The reviews back that range up rather than just restating it. In May 2026 a repeat customer described John and his son installing a back patio door and a large kitchen window and replacing multiple rotting boards and fascia, making a point of how the surrounding areas were protected and cleaned up. Another writing that same week was finishing a first-floor half bath and starting the master bathroom upstairs. In February 2023 a homeowner who found a disaster under a leaking toilet had the toilet replaced and the subfloor torn out and relaid; days earlier, another described a basement renovation where the firm ran the subcontractors start to finish, finished on time, and drew a comment from the town building inspector on the quality of the work. A 2021 review covers a bathroom and a wine closet. What stands out is how many people come back. Several reviewers say they have hired the Whites more than once, and one writing in January 2023 said they had known them for over ten years, praising both the painting and the carpentry. Two things to sort out yourself. All 26 reviews sit on Houzz and every one is five stars, with no second platform to cross-check — and only 12 of those bodies are actually readable on the page. The credentials are the company's own claim too: it describes itself as a licensed Massachusetts construction supervisor, home improvement contractor and lead-safe renovation contractor and prints licence CS-111061, none of which is confirmed here. A strong fit for a Marblehead or Swampscott homeowner who wants one team for a bathroom, a basement, or a run of smaller jobs, and who values being told what will happen and when. Ask for the current home improvement registration number, and on any pre-1978 house, the lead-safe certification in writing.

I cannot recommend J. White enough. From the very beginning, John and Linda were professional, honest, and incredibly easy to work with. They gave realistic timelines and actually stuck to them, which is far too rare and so appreciated. During our initial walkthrough, they took the time to fix multiple small issues on the spot at no charge, which showed that they genuinely care about their customers (and potential customers!). Their pricing is honest, fair, and reasonable, and they were flexible with scheduling as well. Most importantly, the quality of John's work is impeccable. Every project was completed with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship. Beyond their excellent work, they are simply kind people. They were wonderful with my puppy, who was very interested in being part of everything! Five stars without hesitation. If you're looking for trustworthy, high-quality work from genuinely good people, J. White is the one to call.

John and Linda are an outstanding team. They are professional, communicate clearly and keep the site clean & organized every day. Their ability to pivot and/or problem solve in the moment is excellent as is the attention to detail & craftsmanship. Never any surprises or hidden costs. Everything turned out better than expected. Honest, reliable and truly skilled - I highly recommend them and will definitely hire them again!

I have used the Whites twice. Linda kept me informed during the entire process & got back to me promptly every time I contacted her. John & son did a high quality installation of my back patio door as well as a large kitchen window plus replaced multiple rotting boards & fascia on the house. So neat, professional plus beautiful carpentry work. They protected the surrounding areas & cleaned up after themselves. And, they show up exactly when they say they will be there. Reliable, responsible, friendly & top quality work. I love working with this company & will not work with anyone else going forward.

Linda and John are wonderful to work with. There are many words to describe their work ethics. Here are some of them, honest, reliable, great eyes for details, understanding your needs, making your vision come true, etc.... Oh most important, when they leave for the day, you would never know they were there. We are finishing up the half bath on the first floor. And now starting the master bathroom on the second floor.

John and Linda are the absolute best, after a disaster was found under a leaking toilet, they came out and fixed us right up. From replacing the toilet, ripping up sub floor and laying a new to Linda's final touches they are amazing to work with!
