Landesign is a one-man landscape design shop out of Gloucester, built around owner Douglas Cook's eye for stonework — the kind of firm people call for boulders, blue-stone patios, fire pits and water features rather than routine yard upkeep. Cook, a Manchester-by-the-Sea native and UMass landscape architecture graduate, says he has run the business since 1987, working regional stone and native plantings across Cape Ann and the North Shore. Five Houzz reviews from 2019 and 2020 single out his design sense specifically — a patio and backyard described as "transformed," boulder-and-blue-stone work built to buffer a neighbor's view, and a consultation that walked homeowners through fire-pit and patio materials they hadn't known existed. Houzz puts the firm at 4.3 stars overall. The one account worth knowing before calling: in a 2017 review, a customer said Cook disappeared about two months into a project after roughly 80% of the work was done, stopped answering calls, texts and emails, and had already been paid in full — the customer also said he'd claimed subcontractors were lined up to finish who were never actually engaged. Get a written schedule and a completion date in writing before signing, especially on a larger hardscape job.
