A Newton homeowner facing a failing retaining wall around three sides of the property interviewed several contractors and, in an August 2025 review, wrote that some backed out once they saw the scale of the job — then singled out Bruno and Junior Camara. Big stonework is where Masonworks lives. The Melrose company builds patios, walkways, stone and retaining walls, steps, brickwork and decks around greater Boston, and says on its own site that it has been at this since 2002, with more than 5,000 clients behind it. Recent jobs run to stairs, walls and walkways. A June 2026 customer had an outdoor cement stairway and a sidewalk repaired, called the price fair and the cleanup spotless; another June 2026 homeowner had front stairs and a backyard patio finished on time; a May 2026 review covers a retaining wall, French drain and border cobblestones. Speed shows up too — one June 2026 customer said Junior came out the very next day after the first call, and a 2025 reviewer appreciated getting a detailed, itemized written quote both mailed and emailed. Angi carries 4.9 stars across 546 ratings, Google 4.7 across 27, the BBB file is an A+, and the company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration (#147178) is active. The complaints are specific, and most of them are dated 2022. That July, an Angi customer called a retaining wall a rush job riddled with mistakes: apparent code violations in the stairs, shoddy granite caps, and rock-wall material that didn't match what was contracted and had started bleeding rust. A November 2022 reviewer on a $24,000 stone wall and driveway said the granite curbing didn't fully match in size or color and the asphalt came out uneven, with rough spots and tire marks. On a $14,000 job in January 2022, a customer said the total ran past the quote; the company's posted response calls that account untrue and describes a dispute. More recently, a March 2025 reviewer who asked Junior for advice on a project described him as condescending about the request. For a substantial hardscape project — a retaining wall that has to hold, stairs and a patio rebuilt as one piece — this is a crew whose written accounts run back more than a decade and whose 2026 customers describe on-time, tidy work. Settle the total cost in writing before anyone starts, and if granite or matched stone is part of the design, pin the exact material and color match down in the contract; those are the two things the 2022 complaints turn on.
