A Natick general contractor whose credential list ends with "PADI Open Water Diver". That is not a stray detail — alongside a Certified AWLGRIP Applicator qualification, it points at the other half of the business: docks, dock foundations and repair, boat houses, lift installation, cabanas and waterfront decking, run beside the ordinary work of renovations, additions, new construction and custom woodworking. Robert McNitt is named as principal, with Suzanne McNitt-Murphy handling sales and consultations. The company says it has more than 20 years in construction and general contracting, and quotes jobs anywhere from $2,000 to a million. Where the written accounts get interesting is in how carefully the work is described. A homeowner writing in April 2015 said he caught two of seven mason's pillars out of level before the next stage began, followed the structural engineer's drawings to the letter and held the subcontractors to them, and lifted the old deck boards carefully enough that they could be passed on and reused. Another, the same week, had a master bath done, then came back for a breezeway converted into an enclosed mudroom with the rear deck extended — they noted the bath ran slightly over estimate because they changed fixtures mid-job, and the mudroom ran long on subcontractor scheduling. A third listed years of repeat calls: garage and basement refinishing, custom basement storage, a screened porch, rot repairs, and a rebuilt retaining wall after an erosion problem. Two things to weigh. All four reviews were posted within two days of each other in April 2015, and nothing has been added since. One of those four is signed "Suzanne Murphy" — close enough to the company's own named sales contact that it should be read as less independent than the rest. For dock and waterfront work near Natick this is an unusual and specific skill set, and the bathroom and addition accounts are detailed and consistent. Ask for references from the last year or two, and check the CSL and HIC numbers on the profile against the state registry yourself before signing.
We hired Robert and his team to rip out and remodel 2 of the 3 bathrooms in our home. We are so close to being done and everything is going very well! Being a busy working mom, I have had to lean on Robert to help me make decisions on style, fixtures and other things I just don't have time to address. By nature, these bathroom remodels are expensive (we gutted everything!) but he did some price shopping and kept an eye on the bottom line without compromising quality and style.
We hired McNitt Construction Company first to redo our master bath. Rob was easy to work with, respectful of our ideas and wants for the bath. The project ran slightly over the estimate but that was mostly due to us changing our minds on fixtures and vanity, etc. Overall the bath project was a huge success and came out exactly how we wanted. We hired McNitt Co. again to transform our breezeway to an enclosed mudroom. We had similar experience working with Rob on plans and layout as well as extending the back deck to work better with the new layout. This project also came out exactly how we imagined. It took a bit longer then we originally estimated but this was mostly due to the subcontractors schedules and lining up time with them. Overall we've been very happy working with Rob and McNitt Construction. He and his guys are respectful of the area around them, clean up after themselves. Rob is meticulous to detail and builds like it's his own house.
It was a very excellent experience. Before he started a new portion of the building process he would always check to make sure that everything that was done prior to the next step was done correctly. This was a valuable learning lesson for my husband and myself. When he again checked the mason's pillars he found that 2 of the 7 were not level. We contacted a mason to correct the problem prior to any additional work was done that would have had to been redone had this not been caught. He followed the structural engineer's drawings to the letter and required all subcontractors to do the same. He was an excellent teacher. Patient and knowledgeable and always courteous. We saw him as our personal "Mike Holmes" the star of the reality show " Holmes on Holmes". The job was done on time and to our complete satisfaction. His thoughtful planning of what the costs are and what a project entales is not always understood by the homeowner, but he is always willing to explain why something must be done to secure the integrity of the building of your project- just like Mike Holmes on his TV show. He also removed the old deck flooring carefully and we were able to give it someone else to use in a smaller setting. Our decking flooring is called Moisture Shield and it has hidden nails. This is far more time consuming to install but he assured us we would be much happier with the end result and we are. He also told us to have a cement slap under the steps. The previous steps did not and although they were only 7 years old they were broken and not sturdy. Our new steps land on a stone patio and are very secure. The deck is not just a deck to us. It literally transformed our entire backyard. We highly recommend Robert McNitt Construction Company for your building needs. He does excellent work. As a follow up comment we have had several neighbors and friends visit our beautiful deck. Many have come to ask about the process and admire the quality of the work. Our home has also been featured in a local magazine and the deck was a huge point of interest to the editor.
Over the past several years, McNitt Construction has done a number of projects on my house. These have included refinishing the garage and part of the basement, building custom storage in the basement, adding a screened in porch, repairing various areas of rot, and most recently, addressing an erosion issue that required rebuilding a retaining wall. In the all of the projects, Robert has discussed all options and made suggestions. He has costed out different materials that could be used so that I could make the final choice. I have been pleased with Robert's aesthetics - he is concerned with form as well as function. After each project was completed, the site was cleaned and all debris was taken away. I will definitely use McNitt Construction for some future projects that I have planned.
