Almost every recent job people describe here is a railing. North Shore Iron Work fabricates and installs hand rails for outdoor and indoor staircases — one customer this spring had multiple hand railings plus a fire-escape rail made, fitted and repaired — even though the shop sits in the fencing category, and HomeAdvisor lists it for wrought iron fence installation, repair and metal work. The two directories don't agree on where it is: Thumbtack puts it in Haverhill, HomeAdvisor at 1 Brickett Street in Lowell. The company says it has nine years behind it and five employees, and Thumbtack shows 32 hires. What customers keep coming back to is the handoff. The recent reviews credit the process and the timing being explained up front, and describe the work from estimate through completion; on Thumbtack that adds up to 4.9 across 32 ratings, 97 percent of them five stars, with a history running back to 2021. Depth is the real caveat. Nearly all of that record sits on one platform — HomeAdvisor's 5.0 comes from just two reviews, both dated September 2021 — so a 4.9 across 32 ratings is one company's account of itself on one site rather than a picture corroborated across several. Thumbtack also lists a background check completed in March 2025 for Rychardson Oliveira, which is that platform's own screening, not a state credential. Massachusetts exempts fencing-only contractors from home improvement contractor registration, so there is nothing missing on that front. If what you want is iron fabricated to fit — a stair rail, a gate, a repair to something old — this is the kind of shop that work goes to. Confirm which location you're actually dealing with, and settle the design and schedule before the metal is cut.

Richardson and his team did a fabulous job at our property; turning what looked like a disease-ridden fence into the beauty you see below. They were quick to the job, worked with us on the price, and even did some extra work on top of everything else free-of-charge. He explained what they were going to do, answering any and all questions, while not "scaring" us into a much larger project than was actually necessary. In addition he also gave us valuable information pertaining to the preservation of the railing & fence into the future (advice you're unlikely to get from the majority of contractors). His prices are fair and I can tell you first hand he cares about his reputation along with that of his company. How do I know this? Well, being the perfectionist that I am, I had spotted some minuscule and nearly unnoticeable spots of paint missing along this very long and intricate fence. We talked about it, and with the next chance he got (Monday 8 AM SHARP) he was there in the freezing cold to make sure that we were satisfied. He's an honest gentleman and deserves your business. Thanks again Richardson! Details: Structural (e.g., beams) • I am repairing an existing item (i.e. repair or restoration) • Welding • My home, venue, etc.

What does a fence cost in Greater Boston?
Typical Greater Boston range for this kind of work, from regional averages — not a quote from North Shore Iron Work. Use it to sanity-check bids, then get the real number in writing.
Walk the line and pace it off — a pace is about 3 feet.
Estimated range
$4,050 – $7,950
Typical fencing project around $6,000
