Northern Lights Painting is a Stoneham firm founded in 1989 by Michael Traub, now 37 years into a business built around high-end interior and exterior finishes for luxury and historic homes across Eastern Massachusetts, and its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active. The reviews repeat one idea in different words: the prep work is the job. A November 2025 review from a client of over 30 years describes a large Brookline project — trim and stucco repair and paint — done with heavy protection of surrounding areas and work the client called outstanding, both on that project and on smaller interior repairs done earlier the same year. A September 2025 review goes further, describing the crew consulting directly with Benjamin Moore representatives to choose the right products for a siding job, then meticulously cleaning and prepping before priming and finishing. Another reviewer, describing a trim restoration, said the crew turned "orange peel, brush-stroke laden, seam-cracked trim" into something "you can't help but run your hands across." The client list skews toward long relationships and demanding settings: one reviewer has worked with the company for over a decade in Boston's high-end residential market, and another describes a second painting job on the same apartment, complete with daily work-plan updates and rates they called reasonable. In a March 2025 review, the company handled a full repaint of St. Francis Chapel in the Prudential Center on a tight schedule, described as professional and respectful of the space throughout. All 11 reviews on file, from 2022 through late 2025, are five stars, and nothing in the record surfaces a complaint. The company also holds EPA-RRP lead-safe certification, relevant for anyone painting an older or historic property. One thing to know going in, per one reviewer: the work isn't cheap — but for anyone who wants that level of prep and finish, the price reflects the craft.

We have been working with Northern Lights for over 30 years now - this summer they painted our house (trim and stucco repair and paint) in Brookline - a huge project. Earlier this year they did some smaller interior repairs. In both cases the work was outstanding. Great care to protect non work areas, careful prep and of course perfect painting. Took on a few repairs that weren’t strictly speaking paint problems. Worked within their estimate. Great communications, really nice crew, good response when there were issues. Michael has told me repeatedly over the years that it’s all in the prep - and that’s so true. But it’s equally in the relationship, and in understanding the customers’ needs and providing the right solution for the job. Thank you Northern Lights!
Northern Lights did a thorough assessment of the condition of the siding and consulted with the representatives of Benjamin Moore to ensure that the specific products used would provide the best protection for my home. They listened carefully to my concerns. The crew meticulously cleaned and prepped the siding before priming and applying the finish coat. Nate, the crew chief was great! He was as interested as I was in having the job done perfectly, and he had a great eye for detail. The house looks great and I am very happy with the results!
I have had the pleasure of working with the Northern Lights team for several projects to date. Their quality and attention to every detail is truly next level, every job- every time T Adley KVSC
Outstanding and professional service! Highly recommend - have used for multiple projects and renovations since 2010.
Joel Menezes and his team are the best. As they say, "it's all in the prep" but the Northern Lights team go way beyond that. They removed the remnants of an orange peel, brush-stroke laden, seam-cracked trim and turned it into a baby's bottom - you can't help but run your hands across the painted woodwork. And every one of them is hard working, pleasant and responsive. Yes expensive, so not for everyone, but if you appreciate the artistry the Northern Lights team is for you.
