Old Colony Masons is a Quincy operation with an unusual pedigree for the trade — a family business that traces back to 1946, now run by fourth-generation mason Jay Casey, who shows up by name in nearly every review on file. The specialty is broad hands-on masonry: patios, retaining walls, walkways, chimneys, foundation repair and pool decks, most of it built or rebuilt from the ground up rather than resurfaced. The written record is unusually specific for the work described. Reviewers describe a full patio rebuild that removed a 10-inch concrete base and regraded for drainage, a 130-foot retaining wall replacement after other companies wouldn't even show up to quote it, and a leaking deck over a garage that was rebuilt to eliminate the leak entirely. One customer describes a wall Jay built in Milton years earlier that still holds up — and says when a car hit it recently, the crew came back and fixed it quickly. Several reviewers specifically say they chose Old Colony over cheaper competitors because of the thoroughness of the consultation and a sense the company wouldn't cut corners. The most recent review breaks that pattern. In a 2026 review, a customer describes stair railings installed as a "free" favor after a separate wall job — railings the customer says are reused or rejected material from another project, sit at knee height at the landing, and pose a fall risk to an aging family member the project was built for. It's a specific, safety-relevant complaint worth asking about directly, even against an otherwise deep and consistent record. Its Better Business Bureau profile carries an A+ grade with accreditation and lists seven years in business under that name (the company says it refocused specifically on masonry work in 2005, after operating more broadly since the 1940s). For a substantial masonry project — a retaining wall, a full patio rebuild, foundation or chimney work — Old Colony Masons has a deep, name-consistent track record to point to. Just get specifics on any "extra" or complimentary work included with a job, given the one account of hardware that wasn't up to the same standard as the paid work.
“did an excellent job on my front walkway”
Jay did a good job with the wall installed on the property ( although it took a lot of back and forth to make it happen). However the issue was with the “free” railings he installed at the stairs which sounds like a favor but after they were installed served more of an eye sore and hazard. These railings are obviously left overs or rejected part from another job, The railings are too low at the landing and almost at knee height which can go unnoticed and cause someone to fall over them, in this case, my aging mother for whom my brother and I had this project done for. They don’t look good either , definitely not code to code . Would be better if they weren’t installed at all. Furthermore, no landing was put to attach the new brick stairs to the existing path . Leaving a 2’ lath of dirt between the concrete pad and the new stairs , again, causing a hazard as in the rain , mud can develope there and cause a trip. Old colony masons are talented , but unless you have clear stamped architectural drawings to give them tomorrow they’re going to do things their way leading to potential arguments, disappointment, and general upset. The landing was mentioned in conversation and in the contract . Their exuse for not completing the landing , connecting it to the existing wall was was “we ran out of bricks” - this is literally 20 bricks or less to complete , we even said it can be made from concrete to make it easier for them. No reification was reached We plan on doing the railings correctly , and landing and going to small claims for the difference because it is not safe the way the left it. Again- no railings would be safer than the ones they put. If Jay would like to resolve this when can call anytime.
We are pleased with the finished product. There were obstacles that got in the way but Jay Casey was able to get the job done. The workers were professional and respectful of the property and our vision. We would recommend Old Colony Masons for your masonry needs.
Jay and his team were fantastic to work with on a recent back patio project that additionally included creating a retaining wall and water remediation via digging dry wells for the downspouts off my home and exterior foundation repair. Their consultation in planning the project from the beginning was invaluable - it’s immediately clear they have a wealth of experience you can rely on and trust. Their team was very professional, communicative, and transparent throughout the process and importantly, it was obvious they took pride in the quality of their work. The final product turned out even better than I had expected ultimately and I cannot recommend them enough.
They do great work. I am very happy with the results. A good quality company.
Jay and his team are amazing. Jay did our retaining wall in Milton a couple of years back and it continues to look great. The team are clearly expert craftsmen, highly professional, and worked quickly and efficiently...all at a fair price. They were also super helpful in picking high quality blocks/materials that look fantastic. I also had an issue recently where someone hit my wall and Jay and team responded super quickly to get it fixed! Couldn't recommend enough...10/10.
