Stone is what people hire Oliver Enterprises for. The Woburn company calls itself a full-service landscape design and construction firm working metro Boston since 1988, with designers, masons and excavators on staff, and the reviews bear the masonry part out in detail. The most thorough account, from September 2012, describes a whole front-yard rebuild: a New England field stone porch with wrought iron railing and granite treads replacing crumbling brick, a meandering concrete walk hand-embedded with small stones, regrading and downspouts rerouted to a pop-up to fix drainage. That homeowner made two points worth repeating — the crew charged exactly what the contract said, "to the penny," and adjusted the path to protect the roots of an old oak. A May 2016 reviewer had four-plus rotting railroad-tie retaining walls rebuilt in field stone, then came back in 2014 to swap an asphalt driveway for pavers. In August 2017, a patio and brick driveway job stayed on schedule, with a concrete surprise under the planting beds absorbed without fuss and change-order pricing explained up front. The one sour note is the newest thing on the page, and it isn't about workmanship. In June 2021 a homeowner with a $30,000-$40,000 project wrote that a knowledgeable estimator visited, promised a quote in about a week, and then went silent through a month and a half of unanswered calls and emails. A March 2015 reviewer also noted the company wasn't the low bidder, though within range. Everything published sits on one platform and stops in 2021, so there is no current outside account of how the shop runs today. Worth calling if you want fieldstone walls, a paver driveway, a stone porch or drainage put right, and you value the kind of masonry the older reviews describe. Pin down the quote date at first contact and follow up hard if it slips — that is the failure mode this record shows.
I reached out to Oliver Enterprises for a residential project that I expect would've cost anywhere from $30-$40k. Initially, things went well. They responded to my request and sent Chris to my property. Chris was knowledgeable and personable and my wife and I felt comfortable moving forward with our project. Chris said he was a little busy, but that he would get back to me in a week or so. I waited two weeks before reaching back out, but now nearly a month and a half later, radio silence. Multiple calls and emails went unanswered with only vague promises of "he will get you that quote soon." I know things are crazy with residential construction projects, but this was 1) not a small job, 2) not overly complicated, and 3) Oliver Enterprises expressed multiple times that they were interested. If this wasn't something they thought feasible for their schedule or interest, then they least could've given the courtesy of telling us to look elsewhere. I would strongly encourage anyone considering using this company to look elsewhere as no homeowner needs a contractor to disappear while trying to complete your projects.
Chris, and Elmo at Oliver enterprises did a great job. We hired them to redo our patio and driveway. Chris drew up the design. He made many modifications as we came up with new ideas, while giving excellent suggestions. We wanted trees in our little patio with limited sun, and we now have 4 tall Hornbeams which are perfect for the space. The work began on schedule and was completed on time. When they encountered unexpected problems, like concrete under the planting beds, they addressed them without much to-do. Any extra charges for changes in plan were always thoughtfully conveyed and very reasonable. Elmo was patient with our search for the driveway material, and we finally settled on a variety of brick. His men did a fantastic job laying the brick. On their own initiative, they also sealed gaps in the fence separating the next property making it look much nicer, and keeping rain water from draining into the driveway. Our patio and driveway look great and have received many compliments. We’re cost conscious, and felt that the pricing was reasonable. The whole process was smooth and we were confident all the way that Chris would do his best to make us happy with the work. We would hire them again, and recommend them to friends.
We had Oliver do two jobs at our home since we moved in a few years ago. The first was rebuilding our retaining walls in our back yard (4+ walls all together). Not trivial! Old, rotting railroad ties needed replacing. We decided to go with field stone, and Oliver did an amazing job. They built the back layer nicely and the masonry with the field stone is beautiful (one of the reasons we hired them). John was quick to answer any questions we had during the process. This was summer of 2012. We hired his team again in 2014 to convert our asphalt driveway to pavers. Once again, a great job. We had to rebuild the concrete curtain coming from the garage, which we weren't anticipating, though the quote was reasonable and we're happy with the results. When we see old pictures with the asphalt, we can't believe how much nicer our driveway is now and what a difference it makes!
Had a new front staircase, walkway and wall built and the finished product is beyond what we could have hoped for! Just beautiful! The job was done on time and the folks doing the work were wonderful! Would use them again!
Jeff Oliver of Oliver Enterprises has never been anything but professional. He is responsive, attentive and handles a project from start to finish. His attention to detail, creativity and craftsmanship is exceptional. Would hire them again and again.
