A South Boston developer writing in January 2025 had been watching Portanova work for decades — plain asphalt, rubber, and a slate and copper mansard on a brick building that he called a masterpiece. A customer in August 2025 had a job at the other end of the scale, small enough to be brushed aside, and said Alex never once made it feel less important than anyone else's.
Portanova Roofing is a family business in Weymouth, founded in 2013 by Ken D. Portanova, a fifth-generation roofer, with a second location in Fryeburg, Maine. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active. The work spans residential and commercial roofing, siding, gutters, skylights and silicone coatings across the South Shore — Hingham, Scituate, Marshfield, Braintree, Quincy and a dozen towns besides — and the company says it holds CertainTeed SELECT ShingleMaster and Owens Corning Preferred Contractor status.
Getting hold of someone is a recurring relief for reviewers. A November 2025 homeowner asked five roofing companies for a quote and says Portanova was the only one that responded; Jim climbed up and inspected, quoted fairly, and the crew arrived within a week and a half. In August 2024 Mike came out to look at leaks and found and fixed the problem within minutes. In June 2026 a homeowner who needed an inspection and supporting documents for an insurance claim had both inside two days.
The jobs themselves are varied. In October 2025 a roof and a solar-powered Velux skylight went in together, and the next day the pile of old roofing was gone. In November 2025 a crew stripped two layers of asphalt shingles and replaced the boards that had rotted underneath. Rubber roof replacements come up in July 2025 and again that March. An April 2026 repeat customer whose main roof they had done five years earlier had an addition roofed in a single day through rain showers, with the yard left spotless. In January 2024, storm damage to an old 1600s shingle roof was handled by Jim and Matt.
One person had a very different experience. In February 2024 a Hyde Park property owner said they rang on a Thursday afternoon, got no answer, left a voicemail and never heard back; they rated the customer service zero and said they could not speak to the workmanship.
