Read the Houzz reviews for Redmond Design Group and the same odd detail keeps surfacing: the neighbors hired them too. A homeowner writing in 2016 counted more than a dozen friends and neighbors who followed them to the same crew, both next-door houses included; another in 2017 said more than half their immediate neighbors had done the same. That is unusual word-of-mouth. It is also, almost entirely, ten years old. The company says Susan Redmond founded it in 1996 and still runs it as principal, owner and designer, with about 30 years behind the business. Its BBB page lists her as president of a seven-person corporation and carries an A+ grade, though the company is not BBB accredited. They work MetroWest and Boston — by their own account Wayland, Lincoln, Concord, Lexington, Sudbury, Cambridge and Newton — on residential design-build: planting and garden design, stone and brick masonry, patios, fire pits, water features, outdoor lighting and pool surrounds. Masonry is the through-line in what customers actually describe. Bluestone front and back walkways, front steps built out, existing cement staircases capped in bluestone and stone veneer with lighting added to every step, from a 2023 Google reviewer. Three stone walls, finished on time, in 2017. A low garden wall rebuilt, a drywell dug, the garden graded and planted and a stone walkway laid in a single day, in 2015. The most detailed account, also 2015, walks through two projects: a six-week backyard overhaul that landed inside the quoted time and budget, with a flawed bluestone cap traced back to the vendor and replaced. Two accounts pull hard the other way, and one is current. In May 2026 a homeowner wrote that they hired Redmond on the strength of its premium positioning and sales process, and that the finished backyard fell materially short for that price point — crediting the company for staying engaged and fixing craftsmanship and design issues raised along the way, but arguing those issues were controllable and should never have existed. In March 2021 a Houzz reviewer went further, calling them dishonest and saying they were told no permits were needed when permits were in fact required. The two platforms don't agree on the overall picture either: Houzz publishes 4.7 across 15 ratings, Google 3.8 across 6. This is a fit for a homeowner planning a designed, masonry-heavy yard — patio, walls, steps and lighting as one coordinated project — rather than a quick maintenance call, and who wants the designer herself on site. Before booking, pin down who pulls the permits and put the design and material choices in writing, and ask for references from the last year or two rather than the decade-old ones.
Recently completed work with Redmon and I couldn't be happier with how things turned out. I had a full backyard remodel with unique lighting, a fire pit, and sitting area. They performed the work on time, ended before schedule, and came in under budget from previous estimates I had received. I would highly recommend and will be hiring them any time I need work done.
I contracted Redmond Design Group based on their premium positioning and sales process, which promised a high-quality, “finished state” backyard product. Unfortunately, the final deliverable and overall customer experience fell materially short of those expectations for a firm at their price point. To Redmond’s credit, they remained engaged throughout the project and ultimately addressed several craftsmanship and design issues that were raised. However, my core frustration is that many of these were controllable issues that should not have existed in the first place. The overall process was marked by persistent ambiguity around scope and finish expectations, poor planning and coordination, lack of attention to detail, inconsistent pricing/change-order discussions, and a customer experience that was far more stressful and hands-on than it should be. The clearest example was the project close-out itself. Completion was declared via a final payment request, with no formal walk through, or request for feedback / discussion. When final finish issues were raised, the response was resistance and deflection rather than a proactive effort to deliver a clean final product. While Redmond completed the major scope items, they repeatedly declined requests for a basic final site sweep and power wash despite a significant “deep cleaning/site finishes” fee being included in the project pricing. I was told the patio had already been cleaned earlier in the project, which is true, but that is standard job site maintenance — not a final, presentation-ready clean consistent with a premium project, and the fees paid. The attached photos are from the day Redmond declared the project complete and requested final payment, allowing prospective customers to make their own determination regarding the final quality and attention to detail that was delivered as their completion. I made repeated efforts to resolve concerns directly and professionally before posting public feedback. While Redmond preferred these concerns remain private, I believe honest and factual customer feedback is important in helping future customers make informed decisions. In summary, my criticism is the failure of what was presented and priced as a premium, turnkey experience. For this level of investment, homeowners should not need to act as project managers, repeatedly seek clarity on finish scope, experience multiple avoidable issues, or push for basic close-out items such as a final site clean. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Redmond Design Group to customers seeking a highly polished, turnkey customer experience consistent with their pricing and marketing. You can achieve the same process and outcome at a much lower price point.
This crew is incredibly professional and their work is worth every penny. I've hired a lot of crews in the past, and this one is top notch quality. Hired the team to re-do our front and back walkways with bluestone, build out our front steps, cap some existing cement staircases with bluestone and stone veneer, and add lighting to all the steps. They did an incredible job.
Would not recommend. They are dishonest and seem more interested in making money than doing the right thing. They told us about apparent setbacks, but they didn’t even bother to check that they were wrong. They told us no permits are needed, but obviously that was incorrect. Some materials were apparently only available in China but only looked into them after we pointed out a neighbor who told us about local availability. They will tell you things that are wrong, simply because they couldn’t be bothered. After we stopped working with them, and started working with another company we realized how dishonest they are. If you need a recommendation someone better, let me know. It won’t be Redmond.
Susan and team redesigned and installed new platings in both my front and back yards. Everything was done to perfection. The design was exactly what I was hoping for and the installation was exceptional. The team was courteous, friendly and professional. The customer really comes first. Everything was taken care of from design, installation, lighting and irrigation. It made for a very stress free project. Redmond Design created an outdoor space that I enjoy all year round. Exception job by all!!
