SAM Mechanical is a Merrimack-based mechanical contractor whose main business is commercial and industrial — design/build work, chillers, cooling towers, control systems, exhaust and piping — with residential heating, cooling and plumbing alongside it. Its New Hampshire HVAC licence MBE0006359 is verified active in the state registry, and the Better Business Bureau has accredited it at A+ since November 2010, listing Steven April as owner and an LLC formed in December 2003. The company's own site says it has been in business 30 years. The written record from homeowners is short but specific. A July 2026 customer described an air conditioning replacement costing over $10,000 that the company fitted in two days before the Fourth of July in 100-degree heat, naming the person who answered the phone and the service manager. In an April 2025 review, a self-described picky customer who normally does his own work said a mini split install was quick, that the technicians explained each step, cleaned up and walked him through the system, and that he could not fault the work on inspection. A July 2024 customer had a broken system repaired the same morning and was shown maintenance steps to avoid a repeat. The one qualified account is older and worth knowing. In an April 2022 review, a repeat customer who had bought a furnace and an air conditioning replacement said the company is usually a little pricier but reliable, then described being unhappy with how an after-hours call was handled when their furnace failed on a Friday evening while they were six months pregnant, shortly after a visit for what seemed to be the same fault. Its Google profile averages 4.4 stars across 59 ratings — more ratings than there are written accounts, so the numbers carry more of the story than the text does. For residential heating and cooling from a firm whose day job is commercial plant work, ask what the after-hours arrangement actually is, and get the price agreed before the visit.

Best experience with a service provider I’ve ever had. Customer service was outstanding from the moment I called. Sandy answered—she felt like a close friend immediately. They prioritized my residential installation 2 days before a major holiday (4th of July) and it was 100 degrees outside! Kevin, the service manager, was also extremely friendly, professional, sincere and honest. The AC replacement and installation cost over $10k, which was terrible news, but it was the most favorable experience I’ve ever had with a service provider despite having to spend that kind of money unexpectedly. They did project in 2 days and Kevin’s coming back to check on things next week. Kevin gave men his cell and is super accessible. Same with Sandy. I can text them and they respond within minutes. My house is already cooling down and they finished the project 20 minutes ago! BTW, I feel very safe having them in my home whether or not I’m there. Finally, I’ve worked with the same small, family-owned service provider (heating and plumbing group) in Manchester that my family has worked with for 40+ years—and they’re family friends—but I’m switching to SAM for all my AC (and almost certainly my heating and plumbing) needs now because my service and experience was that outstanding. Big thanks to Sandy, Kevin, and the rest of the crew for prioritizing my project and for making the process so easy. I genuinely enjoyed working with you all and look forward to working together in the years to come.
My wife and I hired Sam Mechanical to install a Mini Split System in our home. We could not believe how quick and proficient the install was. I am an extremely picky person and usually do everything myself. I was super impressed with the tech’s professionalism, knowledge and how polite they were. They kept me informed on what they were doing and asked multiple times if I had any questions. When the install was complete, they cleaned up after themselves, and showed me how to use the system. As I said I am very picky so when they left I inspected all of their work and could not be happier if I did it myself. I would recommend Sam in the future. In fact my son is now looking to have them do an install for him. Kevin
Amazing company. One of their tech’s Tim came to our house this morning to fix our broken hvac. He was friendly, professional and did great work. He also taught me some maintenance tips I was unaware of that will save me in the future. Highly recommend SAM mechanical, not just for great service but looking out for your best interest. Thank you!
Great customer service and reasonable rates. Would recommend highly.
I've used SAM Mechanical for a furnace and an AC replacement, plus maintenance and fixes since I moved to the area a couple years ago. USUALLY they tend to be a little pricier, but provide reliable, professional, and quality service. However, in my latest interaction I was disappointed. I'm 6 months pregnant and the furnace died about 8 PM on a Friday, given my condition I was more worried than normal about going without heat. We'd recently had SAM out to fix what seemed like this same problem, so that was our first call. The person on the line didn't seem to pleased to be getting an after hours call. They offered us a Monday apt, but then I'd have had to go all weekend with no heat. We were told we'd pay a $60 upcharge if we insisted on having someone out that night. My husband and I figured fine, let's do it for some heat. The service tech arrived and in <20 min identified that the issue was a faulty gauge on the oil tank and an empty tank despite our automatic delivery agreement (not SAM's fault). So we felt a little dumb and had to go the whole night without heat anyway. A few days later, we receive a $265 single line item invoice. Sticker shock for me, thinking worst case scenario $150 hour + $60 upcharge x 20 min was only going to be like $84. I figured even if it wasn't communicated, we might get hit with a 1 hour minimum... still that would be closer to $200 bucks. I went back and forth with the office by email. I have to say even a little empathy would have soothed my ruffled feathers. But when I asked for help understanding the breakdown of my bill, I got a side-step response "I asked [your husband] if he wanted to wait, and he said to me, no, my wife would like someone to come tonight." A repeated attempt to understand how the charges were calculated got no response. A follow up request got sent to the office manager who just kept repeating that there's always been a flat hourly after hours rate, with a one hour min. Decent customer service in this situation would be a "sorry for the miscomm," or a gesture like "let's take $10 off your next service for the confusion," or even a basic "I can understand how that might have come as a surprise; we'll follow up and ensure we explain the flat rate and hourly minimum charges in the future." I am disappointed in how this was handled. I historically pay a little extra for SAM because I've received a higher caliber of customer service and this didn't feel the same. Service tech was still great mind you. My issue here is solely with the office staff handling calls, invoicing, and emails - not the work itself.
