Typical remodeling project around $29,000
Two 1950s one-bedroom cottages joined into a single modern beach home. An outdated single-story house rebuilt into a 2.5-story home. A build sitting in a flood zone, carried from permitting through finish. Those are the jobs clients write up about Shawme Hill — the cottage conversion in an August 2020 Houzz review, the 2.5-story rebuild in December 2023, the flood-zone build in March 2026. The company is a Sandwich design-build general contractor working across Cape Cod and the South Shore on custom homes, whole-house renovations, additions and ADUs; it says it has been doing that for more than 24 years and that Kevin Hamlin owns and leads it. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #184694, is active on the state registry. Kevin is named in most of the accounts, from 2016 through March 2026 — available for consultation through a March 2023 bathroom renovation, and working alongside his son Ian on a kitchen in a December 2018 review. The crew gets named too: Mike and Ian on an August 2026 kitchen, Matt and Mike leveling a shower space and prepping walls in March 2023, Ian and John on finish carpentry in March 2026. Two accounts speak to schedule and budget. A July 2022 kitchen remodel that covered all the plumbing, electrical and cabinet work came in on time and in budget, and a June 2017 client said both segments of their project landed on schedule and on budget. Two 2017 clients described the company staying responsive through a four-week permit wait and cabinet measurements that came back wrong from the kitchen designer. People also come back: one June 2017 Houzz reviewer had used the company for a kitchen and then a bathroom, and another that month said they had been a client for years. Three cautions sit in the same history. A December 2023 client in Sandwich said the remodel ended up costing a bit more than they thought, while calling the experience positive. A 2017 BuildZoom reviewer said the first contact was pleasant and professional, but the bid that was promised never came. And a 2016 Angi reviewer left half a star and a single line: get everything in writing, every detail. Most of this written history is older, the bulk of it posted between 2016 and 2020. The newest accounts are the August 2026 kitchen, the March 2026 flood-zone build, and a November 2025 renovation of a 50-plus-year-old beach cottage taken through design, permitting, demo, construction and finish work. For a gut renovation or a new build on the Cape where the permitting and an old structure are the hard part, this is a design-build outfit whose clients hire it twice. Before signing, get the scope, the allowances and every change order in writing, and settle how cost increases get approved while the work is running.
Shawme Hill remodeled my kitchen and I love it! Mike and Ian were professional, neat, and detail-oriented. They always answered my questions and I was happy to have them in my home.
Extremely happy with our build ... Shawme Hill and specifically Kevin covers all the bases. Our build was complicated due to being in a flood zone ... his local knowledge is spot on. From permitting to finish!! Special shout out to his finish carpentry team Ian and John ... ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. His team is currently managing both this house and my brothers house in West Denis as we are up in Boston. Very convienent as his team is based in Sandwich and has so much build experience that the day to day issues with the houses are quickly tended to ...
Kevin and his Shawme Hill crew did an outstanding job of renovating and updating our 50+ yrs old beach cottage. From design, through permitting, demo, construction and beautiful finish work, Kevin, his crew and his subs completed everything in a professional, complete and on time manner. Throughout the project, Kevin was readily available to quickly answer questions, incorporate changes and provide exceptional guidance, input and feedback. And, we were kept up to date at all times. We couldn't be happier with the whole process, the results and the value. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Shawme Hill for your next small or large construction project. Thanks Kevin, Mike, Ian, and Pedro, the cottage is beautiful, and we will see you on our next job.
One of the areas best building companies.
Kevin led his team to turn an outdated single-story home (with issues) into an absolutely stunning modern 2.5 story dream home. This was a complete renovation and through every stage of the design/build process the highest quality standards were upheld. You don't get through a project of this size without pop-up challenges, and everything was handled with clear/responsive communication and with positive results. I did my homework before choosing this builder, but you obviously know more at the end of a project than you do at the beginning. I would hands down make the same decision again and highly recommend Shawme Hill to others. Kevin (builder/gen contractor) did an amazing job as did his team including Mariana (design), Mike (electrician), Pete (HVAC), and Mike (finish work).
