A recent Google customer had the kitchen of an 1843 farmhouse completely renovated by Southern Maine Remodeling, down to the studs through final painting. That customer said the carpenters handled out-of-plumb walls and ceilings, and that the company ran in-house project management through the carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades, with kitchen design through a partner firm. On Houzz, the company describes itself as doing all phases of remodeling, from kitchens and baths to custom trim, siding, doors and windows, additions and decks. Its website says its work also includes commercial renovation. A 2025 customer said SMR added a fireplace and opened a wall, and appreciated the daily timelines. A 2025 customer who hired the company to remodel a kitchen and bathrooms said that after staffing changes the workers and subcontractors had very little supervision. That customer described plumbing issues, including the hot and cold to a washing machine installed backwards, and said the painters painted over globs of sheetrock putty on the baseboards. The same customer said the final bill came with no official final walk-through and warned of last-minute nickel and diming. A 2025 customer who asked for a quote on updates to a small master bath and a basement apartment said the quote took four weeks, came to $160K, and a follow-up email got no response.
“Is southern Maine Remodeling any good? Their portfolio on their site looks promising, but they don't have too many reviews.”
“Fit-out of the NBT branch was done by Southern Maine Remodeling, of Scarborough, and Port City Architecture, of Portland.”
SMR recently remodeled the kitchen in our 1843 farmhouse. It was a complete renovation, down to the studs through final painting. Given the house's age, there were some challenges with out-of-plumb walls and ceilings, as well as inconsistent old construction. SMR's carpenters were incredible in addressing the challenges, and their craftsmanship was amazing. They treated our house like their own, and took obvious (and well-deserved) pride in their work and in the finished product. One of the real advantages we recognize is that they provide a complete package, from kitchen design (through a partner firm) and in-house project management through the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades, so the process was efficient and timely. We could not be happier with our new kitchen and would highly recommend SMR.
SMR exceeded our expectations with the work performed for us. We added a fireplace and opened a wall and their construction was exquisite. We truly appreciated their daily timelines, professionalism, and friendliness. We will continue to use SMR for all of our home remodeling needs and highly recommend the entire team for anyone requiring any building or renovation work.
Hired them to do a remodel of kitchen and bathrooms. The process was great at first but right before the project started there appeared to be some staffing changes and it was down hill from there. The workers/subcontractors had very little supervision. We ran into multiple issues from plumbing (hot/cold to washing machine installed backwards, turned off water to furnace and never mentioned (had to pay for an emergency furnace technician visit)), these are only the ones we did not realize during the project and had to complain to be fixed. The painters were sloppy (ex. painted right over globs of sheetrock putty on our base boards)and would miss complete areas. We would had to spend our evening looking over what had been done/not done each night and mention to our project manager. At the end of the project we gave up on the nightly complaints if the issue was not large. Any issues mentioned to the project manager were always responded to in a confrontational and argumentative tone. To top it off our project manager came to obtain the lockbox on a day we were not home (never called) and sent final bill with no official final walk through. They can do okay work but be prepared to be your own project supervisor and don’t be surprised with the last minute nickel and diming. Make sure your contract includes in detail exactly what you want and expect. They will happily do something but will send you an over inflated bills for other things that just simply need to be done (ex. painting the baseboards in room that is having all of walls, doors and trim painted). This is also the same baseboard that will eventually need to be redone after I scrape the sheetrock putty off.
Requested a quote for some updates to a small master bath and a basement apartment. After waiting four weeks, the quote was $160K which was absurd. I never got any response to my follow up email. This is a big company, so if you're not willing to spend $100K+, don't bother contacting them. They're not interested in your business.
