A 2022 customer said Superior HVAC & Tank Removal pulled an abandoned 1000 gallon oil tank out of their yard after it turned up during construction of a new deck. Oil tanks are in the company's name, and its website says it installs and repairs home heating and cooling systems, with a stated service area that includes Naugatuck, Cheshire, Middlebury, Oxford, Prospect, Beacon Falls and Newtown. The company says it has been in business 79 years. On Google it averages 4.9 stars from 276 ratings, and the Better Business Bureau grades it A+. A recent customer who has used the company at 3 different homes says John and team stand by their work and equipment. A 2025 customer said Johnnie and his crew disconnected the old furnace and installed a new furnace, water heater and oil tank. A 2024 customer said John was at the house within a half hour when the furnace needed a repair on a Saturday. A 2023 customer wrote that after 7:00 pm on a Friday night the company set them up with a new hot water tank. A 2022 customer with a cracked oil tank said they came the next day and stayed with the quoted price on a job that ran almost 6 hours; that 2022 customer also wrote that they will have to fix some walls. A recent customer wrote that between 2023 and 2026 the company serviced their HVAC system at least 5 separate times for the same issue, a system that did not hold the desired air temperature. A recent customer whose furnace the company had cleaned for years says the company did not offer a service contract, and the company said it was focused on tank removal and other things. A 2025 customer wrote that the owner was doing the work himself and would no longer provide a service contract. A 2025 customer said they waited 4 weeks for a quote promised within 3 business days, and it was never sent. A 2023 customer said a technician sent for a cleaning and a mixing valve change said he could not work with their CPVC water lines, after he had dismantled the piping. A 2022 customer said the tank was removed with ease but the basement floor was spray painted and stained with heating fuel. In a 2024 review update, a customer wrote that the company required cash payment on site.
5 Years ago I left a great review after Superior serviced my furnace and cleaned it year after year. This year, they did not offer a service contract. I called for cleaning and they referred me to 2 outside people (neither answered the phone) Superior said they are focused on tank removal and other things so I guess they are no longer interested in servicing my heating or cooling systems.
UPDATED REVIEW 2026: Between 2023 and 2026, Superior HVAC and Tank Removal performed service on our HVAC system at least 5 separate times. These visits were all related to the same issue – the system did not function properly to maintain the desired air temperature, particularly in the summer months. As the HVAC system installed was still malfunctioning, and we learned that the warranty was held by Bosch and did not require us to use our original installer, in May 2026 we decided to call another company we located due to their familiarity with Bosch systems to come look at the system. This new company was so appalled by the mess of the state of the wiring of the system and our prior experiences trying to have this issue resolved through Superior HVAC and Tank Removal that they did not bill us for their initial diagnostic visits. This new team immediately determined that the main power board on the inverter was fried and ordered a replacement part, which they recently installed. The system has been working perfectly ever since. What we're left wondering is why it took another company 45 minutes to immediately diagnose and correct (what seemed to them to be) a clear malfunctioning part in our Bosch inverter, when Superior HVAC and Tank Removal not only installed the system, but then also visited our property no fewer than 5 times (and we have been billed for 4/5 of those visits) and and failed to diagnose nor fix the correct issue? We do not wish to continue business with Superior HVAC and Tank Removal in the future given these experiences. ****************************************************** We probably saw 10 different contractors before we chose John and Superior HVAC & Tank Removal. We recently bought a house and needed to replace our old oil furnace from the 1970s. John arrived on time always, and was always super responsive via text/phone call with any questions. Phil and Charity at the office were also responsive and thorough. We decided to go with an air-source ducted heat pump and propane backup furnace to replace our oil furnace. Rather than having to work with three different contractors, John was a one-stop shop for our heating/cooling needs. Not only does he own Superior (and do oil tank removals to boot), he also owns Right Energy and got us an incredible deal on a propane furnace backup system (buried 500gal tank, excavation, cheap propane). This saved us a great deal of time and money. The entire process was smooth and easy. John's team, especially Tyler, were also forthright and thorough. While they were insulating our ductwork, Tyler noticed a small leak and saved us probably thousands of dollars in later repairs by the time we would have caught it ourselves. They came to fix the problem the same day. We couldn't be happier with our decision to choose Superior HVAC and Tank Removal! We'd highly recommend them to anyone in the greater Middlebury area!
You don't find out about a company when everything goes well, you find the true character when there is an issue. John and team do premium quality work and stand by their work and equipment. I recommend this company with enthusiasm. We have used them at 3 different homes as we have moved.
Johnnie and his entire crew came out to replace my furnace system. Was amazed by the organization of all the parts and efficiency. Disconnected old, installed new furnace, water heater, and oil tank in a timely fashion. Entire crew was knowledgeable, polite, and efficient. Highly recommend Superior HVAC and Tank Removal.
5 STAR for the outstanding service John & his team provided for the installation of new heat at our moms (3rd Fl). Your efforts in completing the project on time, attention to detail, and the quality of work were exceptional. Special thanks to Charity, who was professional, and very helpful through this project.
