The Iron Shop is a West Hartford shop that designs and installs railings. The company says it has been in business 75 years and lists a service area that includes West Hartford, Farmington, Avon, Simsbury, Hartford, Glastonbury, New Britain, Bristol and Granby. A recent customer needed a railing to get to their car. Steve quoted a price, that was exactly what the customer paid, and two men did the job on what the customer called the coldest day of the year so far. For an entry walk with three sets of stairs, a recent customer said the initial bid was more than they anticipated, so Stephen worked with them to revise the design and fit their budget; the railings were installed and completed earlier than they expected. The shop takes on more than railings. A recent customer ordered 8 replicas of a client's existing trellises and said all 8 came out identical to the original, coated and created ahead of the estimate time frame. A recent customer said Steve repaired a broken ottoman frame quickly and reasonably, and a recent job turned a ski lift chair into an outdoor seat, with pick up and drop off. A recent customer who needed part of a medical device modified said the shop explored what could be done and offered to do it, even though aluminum is not what it normally works on. And when a recent customer brought in an iron mesh armchair damaged by a tractor, Steve suggested it would not be worth repairing and offered to dispose of it. A 2026 customer who had just moved into a house with wobbling wooden slats and no railings said Steve designed and produced, along with his workmen, a foundation and railings. A 2025 customer said the shop put up their Juliette balcony. A 2024 customer said they had custom railings installed on three sets of outdoor stairs and a section of fence to match. In 2022, a customer said Steve, the owner, worked with the patio company, did not mind changes along the way, and charged pricing more reasonable than other wrought iron companies in the area.
Since childhood long ago, I have driven by and admired the beautiful Iron Shop on Albany Avenue in West Hartford. I brought in an outdoor iron mesh armchair which I hoped was fixable after a tractor bumped into it at my home in Maine. Steve was so knowledgeable and helpful. After thoughtful consideration, he suggested it would not be worth repairing and offered to dispose of it. This is old-fashioned neighbor to neighbor service that I greatly appreciated. Even if you don't have a potential project or shopping list, I highly recommend stopping by to see their wares.
Great work on a unique iron project...I would highly recommend using their team!
Had a great experience working with The Iron Shop. I needed 8 replicas of a client's existing trellises. Stephen was quick to respond, and the shop took on the project. They were the right smiths for the job. All 8 trellises ended up identical to the original, beautifully coated and created ahead of the estimate time frame. They even coated the original without anyone asking (Thanks guys!). I would absolutely work with them again in the future. Wonderful experience.
I am delighted with my new railings. They are beautiful
It was a pleasure working with Steve and all the members of his crew. The work and workmanship is extraordinary. I would definitely recommend The Iron Shop!
