Ultra Geothermal is a Barrington, NH specialist in ground-source (geothermal) heat pump systems, also installing air-source heat pumps and ductless mini splits across New Hampshire, Massachusetts and southern Maine. It says it's been in the heating and cooling business more than 20 years and installing geothermal since 2007; the company's NH HVAC license is on record with the state but currently shows as expired, and the BBB separately lists a New Hampshire Division of Fire Safety license. The company's own site claims BBB accreditation, but the BBB's current profile lists it as not accredited, though still A+ rated. The technical praise here is real and specific. A 2025 review described a technician spending real time walking a first-time geothermal owner through how their system worked. Another 2025 review came from a customer who'd used Ultra to service an older open-loop geo system for more than a decade and returned to them for a full air-source heat pump replacement once it failed. Reviews from 2022 through 2024 repeatedly credit the company's technical staff — first Darren, later Parker — with knowledgeable, economical system design, and one 2022 review said the company was just as excellent doing a repair as it had been installing the original system 13 years earlier. But the complaints are substantive too, and they cluster around scheduling and follow-through rather than the engineering itself. A February 2026 review described a scheduling failure on the hottest day of summer that the customer called a dangerous situation and a series of headaches. A 2023 review from a long-time customer said scheduling and communication had become "a disaster" once service was actually needed. A 2022 review described a salesman flatly declining a job with a timeline under six months and brusquely telling the caller to search Google instead. And a separate 2022 review, while praising the lead technician's design work, said the install crew itself wasn't up to the task. Given how much this business has changed hands and staff over the years — reviews name at least three different lead technicians across the record — it's worth confirming who would specifically handle the job today, and pinning down a firm schedule before a system goes down for service.
“We used Ultra: [https://ultrageothermal.com/](https://ultrageothermal.com/) All-in was about $45k for the inside (duct work for forced air/installing the unit) and outside (drilling the wells/connecting to the house). We got the 26% tax credit, so the net cost was more like $33k. Out electric bill is h”
I really hate writing a bad review of a local, independent business. However, Ultra created a dangerous situation and a series of headaches, and I have to strongly advise against working with this contractor. During the summer (hottest day) I scheduled with Ultra when there was a failure with my unit because they were available sooner than other options. The technician who came out was clearly new, but I assumed he was trained enough to do the work. Two days after the visit, the unit failed again. I had my usual provider (Key) come out to diagnose the problem. They spent time explaining the issue, and showed me how the Ultra technician's "fix" almost blew the compressor, which would have been very costly and dangerous. Obviously, I had to spend more money to undo Ultra's mistakes. Key fixed the unit permanently. I called Ultra to explain this issue, and (justifiably) never received an invoice. Now, many months later, they sent me an invoice for the first time, claimed late fees, and have threatened to send me to collections. I was told that Ultra is under new management, and maybe they trying to collect old invoices on work that was poorly done. In any case, it's obviously why there were more available than their competitors at a busy time of the year. Now I have to file a report with the state, and prepare a counterclaim against Ultra, all because their technician put our house at risk. To save you this hassle, I strongly recommend you work with a more reputable provider.
This is our first go around with a geothermal heating set up so I requested a service and a tutorial about my system. Derek was the service provider... he could not have been more knowledgeable or personable... he spent a good deal of time with me, explaining the system... the filters... the settings and was able to provide me with valuable information. He also serviced the system and made a few necessary repairs. At this point I would highly recommend ultra geothermal and derek without reservation. Thank you!
I have been using Ultra Geothermal for servicing my older open-loop geo system for 10+ years, and when that system crapped out I approached them about replacing it. After lots of consultation I decided to go with an air-source heat pump system from them. Communication with Parker was great and they installed quickly and professionally. Highly recommended.
PARKER knows his stuff! He’s a really good guy eager to help you get done what is best for your specific situation. He and his team came out to the house and spent quality time really looking things over and being thorough about measurements and plans. He had in mind the cost versus space and work balance and turned around a plan of action in no time. We aren’t quite ready to commit yet, but he left a great taste in our mouths for when we are ready to take another bite at heating and cooling our 100+ year old place!
We cannot say enough good things about Ultra and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a change in HVAC service! We recently had a new geothermal system installed by Ultra Geothermal in 2022 and have had a great experience. The company is now under new ownership and being run extremely well. The communication and service are top notch. Rey is one of the main people you will interact with coordinating service. He is friendly, professional, efficient and a great communicator! From struggling to even get a live voice with other companies we have worked with in the past (Key Heating, Strogen's), this is a welcomed change. The technician team is led by Derek who is top notch!
